You could of course find that you love the experience so much that an outdoor education camp could be one of the teacher careers for you. All camps are staffed by highly skilled teachers who use the resources of the great outdoors to combine a healthy learning environment with a program of events. Depending on what 'theme' your camp is, camps can range from science based, awareness, leadership, or special welfare camps for the disadvantaged child.
When you attend the course as a student or as a youth councilor you will be given the chance to develop skills such as confidence, whether it is through learning to lead a small group of younger children or whether it is whilst learning to swim in the lake, and independence, as you will be away from home and participating in such life skills as preparing meals and cleaning the campsite.
Education jobs will be looking for these skills, and whilst you are on the camp, teachers will be on hand to help you hone your skills, pointing out where you are lacking in technique and offering much advice on how to improve what you do, whether this is part of a life skill or part of the scientific theory or the recreational activity that you have undertaken. Jobs in education are highly valuable to both the teacher and the students they come into contact with, and teachers at outdoor education camps are no exception. They have the chance to mold and shape many young lives every summer and the personal rewards are numerous.
Teacher careers range from conventional compulsory education systems, whether you prefer kindergarten age children to the more complex needs of the developing teen, to chances to teach in environments which are based largely outdoors and which is a very important aspect of the education system. The value of outdoor activities cannot be measured as it is such a positive experience for so many children. There is a real personal growth period as the camp begins to unfold, and you will find yourself feeling more confident and reassured. You may also get to know yourself better and reveal many things you didn't realize you were capable of, whether it is the chance to think calmly in an environment of chaos or whether you discover you had the courage you didn't expect to find when you climb the rock wall with the help of an experienced instructor.
Education jobs will always be needed, so if you can give yourself an advantage by adding an outdoor education camp to your CV, either as a student or because you volunteered as staff, you will stand yourself in excellent stead when it comes to applying for your first job on completion of your training.
