Education jobs in general and teacher careers specifically all take a certain amount of willpower and discipline and you have to make sure that you know how to handle it. If you are interested in education jobs, remember that jobs in education are things that you need to think about thoroughly and you need to know why you are doing it. Simply being a teacher ''because they will always need teachers'' is a poor idea and you are doing yourself and the children and adults that you teach a disservice.
The first thing that you should understand is that when you are teaching other people, you are not just giving them knowledge. A knowledge dump is something that can be gotten from any book or website, but your function is going to be a bit different. When you teach children, you are not only going to be teaching them the material, you are also going to be in a place where you can teach them to learn things on their own. Think about the old saying, ''give a man a fish and you have fed him for a day, teach him how to fish and you have fed him for a lifetime.'' While one is definitely less labor intensive that the other, teaching someone to fish is going to be more valuable in the long run.
When you think about teaching, what do you hope to get out of it? When you are in a position of power over people and when you are interested in conveying knowledge on to them, you will find that they are in a place where they are going to need to think about what you say and how you say it. Especially when you are thinking about teaching very young children and making sure that they understand how things are going to move forward, you will discover that there are many different options that might interest you. You will not only be teaching them how to add and to subtract, but also how to function in society and how to treat other people. Young children will model off the adults that they are around and when you are dealing with children for six hours a day, you will find that it is important to set a good example!
Think about how well you do with people in general. There are definitely some people who teach school who definitely should not be teachers, and one big reason is that being with groups of people tends to drain them. An introvert is someone who gets energy by being on his own, while an extrovert is someone who gets his energy by being around other people. Which one are you? The answer might influence your decision!
Take some time and consider how you feel about education and what your options are going to be when you are thinking about moving on and finding your career. Do you have the right perspective on being a teacher, and where do you stand?
