The University of Plymouth is seeking to appoint a new Director for the Plymouth Institute of Education (PIoE). This new appointment will provide bold and strategic leadership for the Institute across all areas of its academic provision. The Institute is part of the Faculty of Arts Humanities and Business, one of three Faculties within the University, bringing together a community of thinkers and practitioners across four academic units: the School of Art, Design and Architecture, the School of Society and Culture, Plymouth Business School and Plymouth Institute of Education. The Institution is ambitious for itself and its students, striving for excellence across its Education, Research and Knowledge Exchange activities. The Institute has a long and esteemed history, educating teachers since 1946. Our undergraduate courses offer many opportunities for work-based learning, and encourage postgraduate study in a range of educational and health settings. Over 90% of our BEd graduates go straight into employment after they have graduated. Research undertaken by staff in the Institute is both excellent and highly distinctive, with its lifelong and life-wide approach; foregrounding the vital role learning plays in society and culture. Our researchers explore how and why people learn at every stage of life, from babies to the very old. The Institute has strong research links and networks across the world and a wide range of externally funded national and international research projects. Reporting to the Executive Dean, Faculty of Arts Humanities and Business, the Director role is primarily responsible for formulating and operationalising academic strategy, ensuring appropriate plans and resources are in place for their delivery. This is a truly exciting time to lead the Institute of Education, building on its existing strengths and developing new and innovative ways of taking the School forward. Approachable and visible, the Director role brings engaging leadership amidst a context of rapid change within the University and HE sector as a whole. You will need to be adept at direction setting, delegation and engaging staff in their part in delivering results for the sustainable success of the Institute, Faculty and University. Candidates are expected to be a Professor in their field who brings with them a collaborative management style, with the ability to engage staff, peers and students as you work together to deliver results. Your ability to navigate and support others through change will be critical to the success of the Institute.
