The Fashion Institute of Technology, a part of the State University of New York, has been a leader in career education in art, design, business, and technology for nearly 70 years. The college offers more than 45 majors and grants AAS, BFA, BS, MA, MFA, and MPS degrees, preparing students for professional success and leadership in the global marketplace.

With close ties to industry, FIT draws faculty from the city's art, business, and design elite, and from the rich academic community of the region. The College continually seeks creative faculty members who are passionate about their field and demonstrate exceptional professional capability in the core competencies of instruction design, learning enrichment, globalism, and use of technology, as well as mastery of established and emerging industry practices.

This position will be the college's first shared tenure track faculty line between the Graduate School and the undergraduate Baker School of Business and Technology.

A vital and growing part of FIT's rich educational mix, the School of Graduate Studies provides advanced professional education in seven disciplines closely tied to the college's mission, promotion in the post-baccalaureate study of business, art, fashion and design. The School is dedicated to advancing research in the creative industries and fostering collaboration and a dialogue that links faculty and students to outstanding professionals and practitioners.

The Jay and Patty Baker School of Business and Technology educates students for management and leadership roles within the fashion and related creative industries. The curriculum integrates a deep appreciation of how markets, business environments, advanced business technology and competition can be managed in a global context. The Baker School provides a professional faculty and business climate that enables students to be immediately valuable contributors to their industries.

The mission and goals of the Bachelors of Science in Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing Department is to develop students' creative, intellectual, technological, and analytical capabilities through a course of study that cross-pollinates the aesthetics of the cosmetics and fragrance industries with business outcomes. The program is committed to preparing students for professional excellence in executive managerial and support positions in the cosmetics, fragrance and toiletries business. The range of alumni careers includes but is not limited to product development, marketing, brand management, fragrance evaluation, sales, trend forecasting and project management.

The Masters of Professional Studies in Cosmetics and Fragrances Marketing and Management program provides advanced education for emerging executives and is a think tank of innovative leadership for the industry it serves. The program develops holistic leaders, with dual competency in creative and analytical business skills, through both academic and experiential learning. Students obtain a global perspective of business through field studies in multiple overseas markets and develop agility with leadership skills through an Executive Mentor program that is part of the graduate curriculum. The curriculum facilitates the development of empathic leaders with the objective of shepherding brands that are global corporate citizens and must delight and inspire the end consumer.

Job Description:

The ideal candidate will hold a terminal degree in the field and significant creative and business skills in marketing and product development while being able to identify opportunities for research projects in the beauty industry. The new faculty member will be an integral part of expanding and implementing the continued integration of curricular offerings between the two departments and should demonstrate the ability to take part in shared governance, curriculum development and recruitment.

Responsibilities for the position will include teaching, assisting with the College's cosmetics and fragrance laboratory, mentoring students and building strong partnerships with industry. In addition to excellent professional credentials, the candidate should demonstrate experience in teaching and/or corporate training, scholarly research, trade article publication or industry keynotes, and the ability to produce innovative curriculum.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a desire to participate in department and college-wide committee work, and most importantly, display a passion for the cosmetics and fragrance industry with the ability to convey this excitement to students at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

Implement an academically rigorous experience by incorporating business practices with classroom learning.

Incorporate interdisciplinary programs to mirror the ways in which industry works in the cosmetics and fragrance business.

Maintain strong connections with the beauty industry to allow for the integration of new professional procedures into the curriculum.

Learning Enrichment

Embrace new forms of pedagogy including online teaching, blended classes, and experiential learning.

Foster writing, research and critical thinking skills in the classroom.

Demonstrate knowledge and application of team building skills.

Provide platforms for the development of student presentation capabilities.

Professionalism

Maintain active participation and engage in industry-related research projects which can inform and enhance the discipline.

Participate in global conferences for the cosmetics and fragrance industries.

Maintain a strong network of alumni and industry experts who will serve as a resource for internships, mentors, curriculum development, guest speakers and placement opportunities for graduates.

Demonstrate currency and engagement in the primary teaching disciplines.

Technology

Demonstrate ability to apply the latest technologies to enhance learning and teaching including proficiency in PC or MAC-based operating systems, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the Adobe Suite.

Incorporate programs provided by the SUNY Learning Network (SLN) Blackboard in the classroom and in online and blended classes.

Attend workshops, seminars, and other educational opportunities offered to/for FIT faculty.

Provide students with knowledge of the latest technologies used by the cosmetics and fragrance industries.

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates should have a terminal degree in the field, significant relevant industry experience (10 years), teaching and/or relevant corporate training experience, and a demonstrated passion for the professional development of young executives.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with a record of significant professional achievement, success in industry training and presentations and/or teaching in a university environment (including guest lectures), and mentorship of emerging executives. Strong preference will be given to candidates with global expertise and a demonstrated record of promoting diversity, equity and inclusion in their previous roles.

This position will be required to constantly read and comprehend, occasionally perform calculations, constantly verbally communicate, frequently analyze, and constantly write. The working conditions for this position will be any combination of the classroom, lab, and/or office space. Certain roles may be required to handle machinery and chemicals. The physical requirement for this position will require occasional sitting, constant standing, occasional bending, frequent walking, and occasionally lifting 10 lbs. or less.
