General Description of Position:

Provide leadership and strategic planning for the Academic Advising Center and its intervention programs, advisor training, student tracking and monitoring, and assessment of advising activities for the campus. Direct staff in providing new student guidance and academic advising. Collaborate with other Student Services directors and divisional administration to ensure continuity of services, integrity of advising policies and procedures, accuracy of advising material, effectiveness of evaluative tools, and to improve customer service. Manage the Academic Advising Center’s budget, allocate personnel and fiscal resources, and conduct annual performance reviews of personnel. Oversee development and delivery of campus service area training programs for professional advisors, faculty advisors, and/or peer advisors

Major Responsibilities:

Leadership/Planning

Lead development of standardized data reporting and administration of campus service area assessment strategies that address evaluation of practices and programs

Demonstrate developmental academic advising that assists students in clarifying personal and academic career goals through the use of appropriate student development, human development, and student learning theories

Assist students in interpreting and understanding placement scores, program curricula, and pre-requisites, etc.

Assist students in gaining a basic understanding of the College’s registration process and processes that need to be completed prior to the beginning of each semester

Maintain current knowledge of the institution’s academic programs, curriculum, practices and academic and student policies

Manage academic advising case load in a manner that promotes retention, persistence, and student success through proactive interactions and interventions

Assist students in the development of an Academic Completion Plan

Oversee maintenance of academic advising records in compliance with College and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

Supervise the daily functions of the Academic Advising Center and satellite services

Provide administrative leadership for a developmental, proactive, academic advising program for students served by the Academic Advising Center.

Lead development and implementation of an ongoing professional development program for Advisors.

Lead advisor training, development, and evaluation for professional advisors.

Coordinate with other directors to manage the electronic sign-in and student retention software to ensure efficient, engaging, and supportive access to offices.

Direct the lead team in meeting with directors, deans, program chairs to ensure the accuracy of advising materials.

Participate in college initiatives to improve academic advising.

Supervision/Management

Supervise academic advising staff at regional locations.

Manage academic advising resources and materials.

Administer and manage the Academic Advising Center budget.

Manage reports and tracking data to improve the processes and procedures needed to impact student matriculation, retention, and success.

Work with the Assistant Vice Chancellor to track data regarding the persistence of new, transfer, visiting, and non-degree students.

Student Support

Includes weekends and evenings as scheduled.

Intervene in escalated student issues to provide clarity about college policies and procedures.

Meet with students as necessary to determine the nature of an issue and to guide them in resolution.

Technical Support/Banner Database

Manage electronic student files, track student progress, and contact students as needed to improve student success.

Use computer to access student data and complete work assignments.

Participate in professional training necessary to carry out duties.

Education and Experience:

Master’s degree required

Five (5) years of progressive experience in advising and/or student services.

Three (3) years of supervisory experience.

Ability to plan, organize, delegate, and implement.

Analytical reasoning, independent problem solving, and ability to reach conclusions based on customer needs.

Excellent customer service skills.

Good written and communication skills.

Computer knowledge sufficient to apply basic computer software such as Microsoft Work, PowerPoint, Excel and ACCESS.

Preferred Qualificatons:

Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in fostering student success, in building cross-disciplinary relationships in academic advising and in use of educational software to advance student success.

Community College experience or credential.

Must demonstrate ability to promote an inclusive environment that reflects the broad diversity and backgrounds represented by our students and employees and which every individual feels respected and valued
