About the School of Visual and Media Arts

The School of Visual and Media Arts (SVMA) is one of the largest creative schools within a five-state region. Our mission is to educate and engage the next generation of artists and storytellers in a wide variety of creative practices and research. SVMA strives to promote a holistic, cross-disciplinary approach and foster diversity and inclusion in the study, creation, and dissemination of arts and media. Central to this mission are opportunities to create original works, gain proficiency with a diversity of creative processes (narrative, audio, and visual; in both digital and material systems), critically analyze artworks and media past and present, collaborate within and across artistic disciplines, and research the contextual and cultural history of art, design, and media. We lead --and teach students how to lead --through excellence in creative scholarship and research. Our students develop critical and creative thinking skills, cultivate an informed aesthetic, build proficiency in various modes, methods, technologies, and forms of expression, and gain the ability to assess, articulate, and evaluate a broad range of arts and media.

In addition, SVMA is also home to the University of Montana’s Esports team boasting over 300 players. Our team is foundationally different from any team in the nation as we intentionally focus on creating a community including all students regardless of their background.

We value communication and collaboration to help future foster leaders.

The School of Visual and Media Arts is dedicated to the following:

Providing high-quality preparation for students interested in pursuing professional creative careers,

Maintaining a community of practicing artists, creators, storytellers, and scholars as faculty to provide significant mentoring and rigorous intellectual challenges for students.

Contributing to the culture of creativity and intellectual curiosity for the campus, the local community, and the state.

Serving the local community, the state, the region, and the nation as a source of expertise in creative areas.

The School of Visual and Media Arts at the University of Montana fully embraces and welcomes inclusiveness in everything we do. We are fully committed and engaged in evaluating our creative practice and curricular offerings evolving to meet our students where they are. We want students and colleagues to feel part of our community. We extend our invitation by looking for cross-disciplinary collaborations; we provide high-impact experiential opportunities for our students, faculty, and staff, and ensure that we embody equitable teaching practices to meet students where they are.

We build upon this promise by finding new faculty who want to engage with our students and community in new and meaningful ways. We believe that by inviting a diverse group of people to come together, we will create a space where our students feel like they belong regardless of their background.
