Description:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a research assistant (RA) to contribute to the development and application of novel technology for monitoring juvenile fishes in coastal waters through the project “A technology-enabled, industry co-developed approach to understand early juvenile fish habitat requirements”. Bridging interests / expertise at the University of Plymouth across Dr Benjamin Ciotti’s research group on juvenile fish habitat ecology and Dr Oliver Tills’ Embryo Phenomics team in developing innovative technologies for studying marine life, the project aims to bring recreational fishers, scientists and management bodies together around development of a ‘smart’ underwater camera system capable of monitoring the smallest juvenile life-stages of fish in a range of inshore habitats. We will develop an interactive web-portal to support public participation in video analysis and measure the species abundance and size of fish living in different habitat types in order to fill important knowledge gaps about the essential habitats required by populations of fished species. As part of the vibrant marine research community at Plymouth and operating within Plymouth Sound, the UK’s first National Marine Park, you will work with scientific, industry and management partners on the overall delivery of the project. This would involve extensive camera and netting surveys in shallow waters across the southwest UK, analysis and reporting of data, production of outreach materials and reviews of associated literature. There is also the opportunity to contribute to the development and testing of camera hardware / software and image processing programmes. You should possess the necessary knowledge, skills and experience to lead fish sampling expeditions in coastal marine habitats. A current full driving license and willingness to travel is desirable to transport equipment to remote areas not easily accessible by public transport. The ability to conduct desk-based reviews and literature analyses will also be important. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required to work across partners to produce scientific reports and to develop outreach and public engagement materials. A strong interest and skills relating to the development of new technology would be advantageous.
