invites applications for a
Research Data Management Technician
to join PI-Faist’s restoration ecology group. The successful candidate will primarily be responsible for working with the lab PI to ensure project level data management and effective data collection. Responsibilities may also include lab, field, and greenhouse research, as well as aiding in writing scientific publications and reports for funded projects.
A primary responsibility of this position is to work with past, current, and future data management efforts. This includes implementing best data practices when collecting, entering, compiling, analyzing, synthesizing data. This also includes working with the PI, graduate students, and collaborators in interpreting data and summarizing results. Duties may also include drafting progress reports and assisting in manuscript writing.
Field work duties may include
assisting or leading field installation and monitoring efforts both near Missoula, across the intermountain west and southwestern US. This can include, but is not limited to establishing field plots, conducting field-based seeding, plant growth, environmental measurements, soil sampling, ensuring proper sample processing, and employing field safety protocols.
Greenhouse duties may include
assisting in greenhouse research efforts, such as watering, pest control, data collection, and securing greenhouse level upkeep and maintenance.
Lab duties may include
aiding in plant and soil sample processing following established protocols. Reading the primary literature, plant pressing, working with herbarium personnel for proper plant archival. Following and helping enforce all lab safety and cleanliness protocols is also required. Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require carefully following basic safety precautions.
This position will be tasked with working directly with lab personnel and occasionally leading field crews and organizing undergraduate and technician schedules. Examples of this may include working with field crews to ensure work is being completed in a safe and timely manner and facilitating data handling efforts ensuring high quality data management. The successful candidate will work directly with the lab PI yet will have a degree of independence when making decisions in the field and with research level data management activities. Performance reporting or employee relationship concerns will however be reported to the PI, and this position is not tasked with any formal reporting outside of the standard UM policies.

Position Details
Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, Letter of Appointment and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program
Salary for this position is $36,000 - $38,000 per year commensurate with qualifications
Minimum Requirements
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Range Science, Natural Resources, Ecology, Biology or a similar degree
Two (2) years of experience in standard ecological methods and monitoring techniques as well as demonstrating a base knowledge of restoration, plant, and/or soil ecology
A strong background in project level data management
A valid US driver’s license is required and the ability to meet University of Montana driving requirements to drive university vehicles
Work can involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises
Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 35 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day
