Profile

The Office of Nationally Competitive Awards is seeking a Graduate Assistant to support the Director in working with undergraduates, graduate students, and recent alumni who are applying for prestigious national and international fellowships. Full-time graduate students with strong organization and communication skills (both written and oral) are welcome to apply.

 

The position is 20 hours per week (including occasional evening and weekend hours as required, but not to exceed 20 hrs/wk), and runs from August 2020 through April 2021, with the option to work Summer 2021. Preference is for a graduate student who could be available for at least two academic years, allowing for long-term development in the position.

 

Responsibilities include:

*Implement specific public relations strategies to inform a variety of audiences about NCA, including:

*Sending notices to campus listservs regarding events and deadlines *Overseeing the office newsletter (monthly), once it is in place

*Staff one or more student drop-in info sessions per week *Represent NCA at campus informational fairs for Study Abroad, Honors, Admissions, FYE, etc. *Deliver presentations to classes, campus groups, and student organizations, as needed *Provide event-planning support (including scheduling, catering, registration, etc.) for info sessions and workshops, advisory council meetings, receptions, kickoff events, etc., as needed *Manage and monitor social media outlets (e.g. Twitter) *Assist in maintaining the website and create and edit content regarding campus deadlines, workshops and events, award information, and student profiles *Maintain NCA database *Assist in coordinating the campus application and interview process *Utilize web tools (such as Survey Monkey, Google Docs) for assessment and event management *Contribute to discussions regarding strategic planning and assessment 

Responsibilities (with experience gained over time):

*Meet with students individually to set short- and long-term academic and professional goals; mentor them to match their goals with specific opportunities; provide feedback on applications

Qualifications:

*Graduate student in good academic standing, enrolled full time (PhD-level preferred) *Good interpersonal skills and presentation skills *Excellent writing skills; demonstrated potential for and/or experience tutoring, teaching, or editing writing *Able to work effectively as a member of a team *Able to work effectively in a dynamic and evolving work environment

Benefits include competitive stipend; 9-month position (with potential to include summer if the budget allows); professional experience in growing arena of higher education. Furthermore, the student appointed to this position will be considered for a renewal of the assistantship in the subsequent academic year, providing the student demonstrates satisfactory job performance and continues to meet the eligibility regulations outlined below and in the Graduate Student Handbook. 

 

Potential applicants should note the following graduate assistantship regulations:

*Students must not exceed the maximum accrued credit hour limit for university awards (174 graduate semester credit hours, or 140 for students with a master’s from another institution) within the appointment period. *Graduate assistants are required to register for at least 12 credit hours in Fall and Spring semesters. *Graduate assistants can be obligated to no more than 20 hours of service per week when school is in session. *Students need to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 or their program minimum GPA (whichever is higher) to continue to be eligible for an award.

Please note that students ineligible to receive the award for the full appointment period due to the number of earned credit hours based on the university requirements for awards rule will not be considered.
