Senior Instructional Designer
to join their team. Supporting the goals of UMOnline and the University of Montana, the Senior Instructional Designer (ID) will excel working inter-professionally, leading task groups and working with media developers, chairs, faculty, and other stakeholders, to plan and implement engaging learning activities while maintaining a high-quality end product to meet the learning needs of a target audience.
Reporting to the Director of Instructional Design and Technology, as a Senior Instructional Designer, this position will work collaboratively with faculty and content experts across university colleges and units to design and create compelling and high-quality online and hybrid/blended course curricula. The Senior ID will also lead a team of instructional designers and media specialists with guidance and coaching, as needed. The role of Senior Instructional Designer plays a crucial role in delivering professional development, promoting online learning, assessing online courses, and improving and ensuring the quality of online course development and delivery to improve student learning, engagement, and retention.

Position Details
Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, MUS Contract and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program
Salary range for this position is $55,000 – 65,000 per year commensurate with qualifications
A hybrid remote work schedule is available for this position and a University of Montana Remote Work Agreement is required upon employment. Must have the ability to be on campus with 24 hours of notice.
Minimum Requirements
Master's degree in Instructional Design, Education or a related field and/or demonstrated equivalent work experience
3-5 years of experience in instructional design
Demonstrated experience and tangible success in designing, developing online experiential courses, experience with other models of course design and experience with instructional design consulting and support, and understand the online design processes
3 years’ experience in higher education with a track record of innovation with learning technologies and an understanding of learning science principles and technology trends
Ability to conduct instructional research and analysis on learners and contexts and utilize data-informed practices and develop and monitor long- and short-range goals
Exhibit in-depth knowledge of online and hybrid/blended course design/delivery practices, techniques and technology solutions that enhance and support learner processes and experiences
Exhibit knowledge and understanding of overall user needs and issues for delivery of product and solutions including supporting material/media (e.g., audio, video, simulations, games, virtual reality) that aligns with and enhances instructor needs
Ability to work strategically and communicate effectively with many constituencies, peers, faculty, students, campus administrators and leadership
Work closely with faculty and department chairs to establish achievable timelines for building new courses and revising existing ones
Ability to develop both independent micro-credential offerings, as well as micro-credentials embedded within the university curriculum
Experience providing support for faculty in designing and implementing course assessments; assist the academic departments with documenting and improving based upon their programmatic assessment data
Leadership abilities in training, mentoring and coaching instructional designers in course design, learning experience design, and faculty relationship building with the ability to identify appropriate training and mentoring plans for various constituency needs
Ability to independently lead and manage new design projects and direct a corresponding instructional design team
Experience working with production groups to build learning assets or curriculum, experience working with a variety of media and web developers
Ability to identify needed updates, changes, upgrades as necessary to ensure the design process is on the cutting edge of best practices in online course development in higher-education and supports the mission and goals of the University
Demonstrated problem-solving and project management skills (including the ability to manage multiple deadlines, organize and prioritize work).
Strong organizational skills and the ability to independently manage projects, workflows, and infrastructure with a proven track record of meeting deadlines;
Proven work performance that is reliable, dedicated, productive and exhibits strong self-initiative with the ability to oversee and balance a significant number of course design/production projects simultaneously, respond with adaptability to rapidly changing priorities, and work well under pressure
The ability to work with an instructional design team to define tasks, coordinate edits and revisions, review outcomes, and track team progress on projects, and identify required resources to develop project-level budgets
Exhibit professionalism and integrity through excellent, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills while adapting easily to multiple audiences and delivery channels
Experience in negotiating difficult and sensitive situations that includes the ability to analyze, resolve, and develop long-term solutions to a wide variety of complex/unpredictable problems by using sound, independent judgment within general policy and legal guidelines
Be able to remain current on online education activities including extensive reading of the literature, educational activities, and networking to stay up to date on instructional design research and current events in the educational arena to incorporate the latest, most effective teaching strategies into courses
Experience with one or more learning management systems (LMS) as well as common software used in the design and development of learning experiences and the ability to troubleshoot basic educational technology issues
Demonstrated abilities with use of eLearning tools and technologies (such as HTML, H5P, basic video production, and a comfort with learning new tools quickly) and familiarity with open educational resources (OER)
Experience and expertise in creating and remediating ADA and 508 compliant content
Preferred Qualifications
Experience teaching online, preferably in higher education academic courses
Demonstrated experience leading a multifaceted team of instructional designers and media specialists to create online hybrid courses across a curriculum
Experience as a teacher, trainer, and/or professional development instructor for adult learners or in higher ed
Training and experience using quality standard rubrics (e.g. Quality Matters, OSCQR) for online teaching and learning
Knowledge of trends and future directions of educational technology related to online higher education
