The University of Cincinnati, College of Arts and Sciences is currently accepting applications for an Academic Advisor. The Arts and Sciences advising staff is responsible for orientation, retention, academic advising, and the evaluation and maintenance of student records, including degree certification for undergraduate students.
General Position Description: This staff member will provide academic advising, intervention, support services, and programming to students in the College. They will utilize a student-centred and holistic approach to enhance students' likelihood of retention, academic success, persistence and degree completion. The position also requires a high degree of accountability and responsibility. Daily work involves handling information that is often sensitive and confidential in nature; therefore, discretion is of critical importance. The individual will be expected to exercise sound judgment as it relates to dealing with students, faculty, staff, administrative personnel, parents and representatives of outside organizations. This person must be a resourceful, disciplined and detail-oriented individual. They must be able to work both independently, and as a member of a team.
Characteristic Duties:
*Advising current and prospective students on the various courses and academic programs available to meet their educational goals *Serve as liaison to a college or department; assist in conceptualizing, developing, implementing and evaluating the advising/retention services and programs *Develop alternative pathways to ensure student success (i.e., for students who fail to meet their initial goals) *Perform other related duties as needed/ assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and 1-year experience; OR associate degree and 3 years experience; OR 5 years’ experience. Experience must be in advising high school and/or college students or related field.
Ideal Qualifications:
*Master’s degree and one year of advising experience in a liberal arts college at a large public research institution *Experience communicating the benefits of a liberal arts education *Proficiency with UC computer programs such as Catalyst, My Graduation Plan, Slate, and Starfish
