Greenfield Community College is located in the beautiful and historic Connecticut River Valley of western Massachusetts, between the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains and the fertile farmland of the Connecticut River watershed. GCC is a public community college serving Franklin and Hampshire Counties, Southern Vermont and Southern New Hampshire. Known for the caring and supportive attitude of the faculty and staff, and for the broad support it enjoys from the surrounding community, the college is fully accredited by the New England Commission on Higher Education (NECHE). In addition to a strong Liberal Arts focus, the College offers a wide variety of innovative and successful programs including Farm and Food Systems, Engineering, Fine Arts, Nursing, and Adventure Education, as well as varied learning environments, from traditional classrooms, to hybrid and online distance learning, peer tutoring, one-on-one faculty-student advising, workforce development, and learning communities that cater to specific needs and interests. Close to fifty percent of Greenfield Community College students transfer to four-year colleges, and it is Smith College's largest source of community college transfer students. The rural campus has a one-acre Outdoor Learning Lab, on-campus farm, wetlands and forest that provide abundant opportunities for hands-on learning, research and recreation. Job Description:

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Provides academic advising and career planning guidance for students interested in learning about the various nursing certificates and degree levels as well as admission's requirements, health requirements, requisite courses, and the avenues of opportunity for advanced nursing education. Position involves building supportive relationships with students, helping students to clarify their educational and career goals, providing information on scope-of-work for nurses at various levels, providing transfer and college application information, and providing contact information with admissions personnel in area nursing programs. This position is under the supervision of the Assistant Dean for Nursing.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Assist students from various nursing and allied health disciplines (EMT, CNA, PN, ADN, BSN) who are interested in advancing their nursing education;

Meet with students to help them identify goals and to make appropriate academic, transfer and career plans to further their education in nursing;

Know the regional colleges current nursing program admissions policies, procedures and practices;

Possess a working knowledge of the pre-requisites and the four and eight semester course delivery sequences recommended for the ADN and PNC programs.

Explain the graduation requirements for each GCC Nursing Program

Plan and implement the annual GCC Nursing Job Fair.

Be appropriately available to the student by appointment either via telephone, Zoom or email;

Maintain thorough and accurate records of all interactions with students.

Utilize Advisor Notes whenever possible which provide summary information for in yearly activities and outcomes reporting;

Know the availability and scope of services and resources at GCC and at regional higher education nursing programs; refer the student appropriately when his or her needs exceed the academic advisor's capacity to assist;

Comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and maintain appropriate confidentiality of information regarding the student;

Collaborate with the GCC Advising Center through participation in advisor development opportunities to enhance advising skills.

Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Familiarity with educational expectations of various levels of nursing education;

A Bachelor degree in a relevant content area or documentation of appropriate certifications and credentials in lieu of the Bachelor's degree;

Ability to provide on-campus and off-campus hours to meet with students during times recommended by the program department chair or program coordinator; ability to communicate with students via phone, e-mail or other electronic means.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with a diverse range of students;

Relate accurate information about transfer options and transfer institution-specific requirements in the content area;

Readiness to work collaboratively with the advising center and department chair/program coordinators on and beyond campus to have accurate and timely information to share with students;

Willingness and availability to take part in advising professional development opportunities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Background in providing or supporting nursing education;

Two years' experience teaching, advising, or providing educational support such as but not limited to career planning and tutoring with college students;

Current knowledge of GCC instructional and application policies and procedures as well as the services and programs available to students;

Familiarity with advising principles as described on the GCC Academic Advising Center webpages;

Ability to work effectively with MYGCC advising system and able to readily learn this system and how to use advising notes.

Additional Information:

This is a 10-hour-per-week position provided by an endowment grant to the GCC Nursing Programs. Position dependent on funding.

PAY RATE:

$30.03 per hour or current MCCC hourly rate
