The

Associate Director of the Residential Experience and Student Success

provides leadership for all activities related to UM Housing’s residential experience, including the residential curriculum and student success initiatives, and residential area administration. The residential experience is a central element of the student experience and is a key component of the University of Montana’s student success and retention efforts.

The Associate Director is expected to collaborate with the Director to create and lead progress towards a strategic vision for the residential experience including curation of the residential curriculum, and the development and support of living learning communities and student leadership programs that foster ongoing student development and academic success. Under limited direction of the Director of Residential Education and Community Standards, the Associate Director takes a leading role in managing day-to-day activities related to full-time and student staff supervision, the residential experience, crisis response, and student conduct and support in the residence halls and apartments.

The Associate Director works to develop positive, safe, and inclusive communities under the guidelines established in the University of Montana and UM Housing policies and is an advocate for the comprehensive residential experience in all areas of housing policy and operations. The Associate Director will work with Directors to formulate departmental policy and practices. As it relates to the position responsibilities, the Associate Director has the authority to make commitments and policies that affect department operation.

The Associate Director will be a member of the UM Housing Department Leadership Team and serve as a liaison between the student staff and the Leadership Team. In addition, the position will collaborate with the Assistant Directors, and Area Coordinators/Community Directors to manage and supervise the residential curriculum and social program endeavor in the residence halls and apartments.

The Associate Director will help develop, manage and coordinate living learning activities with campus partners with a goal of student retention. These programmatic endeavors will include opportunities for community enrichment, social and educational development, leadership development, and development of community within the living units.

Specific position duties include:

Directly supervise the Assistant Director of Residential Area Services & Staffing, full-time Area Coordinators, and Community Directors who oversee the paraprofessionals in the residence halls and apartments

Provide guidance to Lewis & Clark Office Manager and University Villages Office Manager related to departmental policies, student conduct incidents and regulations, and hiring procedures

Oversee operational and administrative functions of daily residence hall and apartment management in assigned areas

Serve as a member of the UM Housing Leadership Team

Oversee residential curriculum, living learning communities, academic and retention initiatives, and related ongoing assessment projects including data analysis

Manage development and continued update of residential curriculum planning documents, facilitation guides, assessment tools, and related materials throughout the implementation cycle

Ensure all residential curriculum data including LLC specific information is accurately tracked and documented in a timely manner to develop assessment reports and StarRez dashboards

Oversee student leadership initiatives related to student staff positions and residential leadership programs

Provide holistic oversight for the residential experience, student leadership programs, staffing processes, and residential service administration to ensure programmatic and policy coordination

Coordinate with the Assistant Director of Residential Area Services & Staffing and the Associate Director of Operations to develop, update, and administer the StarRez modules associated with Residential Education

Act decisively, diplomatically, and exercise independent judgment and discretion to advance and protect departmental and University relations in resolving situations

Conduct research on national housing/community standards trends standards to determine goals, strategic planning, and oversight of human/financial resources

Follow up on students of concern to ensure timely outreach and updates

Adjudicate conduct hearings for students who have violated policies; general University hearings as assigned

Help facilitate all student staff trainings and take the lead in overall logistics of training series

Participate in an on-call duty rotation for the UM Housing community 365 days of the year and respond to situations as needed

Collaborate and communicate with campus partners on University and Division Committees, serve as a liaison to assigned academic and University departments.

Position Details

Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, MUS Contract and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package

including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.

Salary for this position is $70,000 - $77,000 per year commensurate with qualifications.

Required Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel Administration, Public Administration, Counseling or related field and five (5) years progressive experience in Housing management or community standards/student conduct position, OR a combination of education and experience in student leadership, student success/retention, or other student affairs position.

Strong knowledge of Housing and/or Community Standards and student personnel administration, student staff training and supervision, and diversity issues common within University Housing and Community Standards organizations.

Ability to understand and utilize new technology within the office; establish, maintain, process and update electronic and paper files, and an overall understanding of the University of Montana’s mission, program, and policies.

Ability to communicate with a wide variety of people in a precise and professional manner.

Ability to maintain an organized workload requiring multitasking and the need to prioritize various responsibilities with little supervision.

Ability to coordinate work schedules with staff, students, faculty, guests, and visitors to ensure that both customer and building needs are met.

Ability to formulate and enforce policies, complete departmental strategic planning, and assist with development of short- and long-term goals within the UM Housing operation.

Familiarity with department safety and security systems; ability to train staff on proper use and emergency response procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

Live in residence hall or apartment staff experience.

Experience working with conference housing program.

Experience with resolving conflict, team building, group dynamics, crisis management.

Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and to delegate those tasks to others

Ability to communicate effectively in a training mode to employees being supervised; ability to evaluate applicants and hire staff; ability to evaluate and communicate with staff about job performance.

Ability to work nights/weekends during certain times of the year and respond to emergency situations as needed.

Progressive experience within Residential Life, Education or Experience programming.

Full-time staff supervision experience.

Experience with building management and staff engagement.

Experience working with Living Learning Communities and Residential Curriculums, and student success and retention initiatives.
