Director of UM Summer.
The Director of UM Summer is responsible for oversight, direction, and development of all summer programs at UM. The objectives of this position are to raise UM’s visibility and enhance summer programs that support the success of pre-collegiate, college-level, and non-degree seeking students, as well as to generate additional revenue for the University. The Director of UM Summer reports to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs within the Office of the Provost.
The Director of UM Summer oversees all facets of summer programming at UM and will provide innovative and effective leadership on the development of a broad spectrum of objectives for UM’s summer programs. This position manages all human and financial resources designated to summer programs, ensuring effective allocation of resources and achievement of goals for growing UM’s summer programs. The Director will lead wide-ranging strategic planning efforts to develop short, mid, and long-term goals for developing a variety of summer programs aimed at diverse student audiences.
The Director will be a highly visible campus actor, who will utilize a well-developed set of interpersonal communication skills to encourage collaboration and innovation in the development and administration of summer programs at UM.
Key duties and responsibilities include:
Lead development of a range of distinctive summer programs at UM geared toward student success and market demand
Collaborate with UM’s 10 colleges to develop and implement summer courses and programs in line with fall/spring terms, working with academic and administrative departments
Recruit students that have started at UM and left to come back in the summer with UM’s Become an Alum Program
Develop and implement strategies and marketing to increase summer enrollment, scale for growth, financial profitability, student enrollment, retention and recruitment, and the utilization of campus facilities
Ensure the timely provision of relevant and accurate data for the use in a variety of strategic planning necessary to provide sound operational leadership
Ensure financial aid and other student success support services are in place for summer students of all types
Manage summer term schedules in collaboration with the Registrar’s Office
Work with UMOnline to develop summer non-credit courses and opportunities for alumni, professionals, the UM Community, and lifelong learners
Oversee budget and personnel operations for Summer terms and programs including UM’s summer term payment deadlines
Work with Information Technology, Registrar’s Office, and Business Services for UM to be able to bill on part of terms in the summer terms
Seek and apply for grant funding opportunities for Summer experiential learning opportunities
In collaboration with the Director of Academic Budgets and Personnel, disseminate financial information on summer budget models to Colleges, and work with colleges on enrollment figures, financial targets and goals
Review scholarship requests for programs under the UM Summer office to determine award allocations and notify award recipients
Develop a marketing plan to recruit international learners and students in collaboration with the Global Engagement Office and Mansfield Center
Communicate with all Montana University System Schools to strategize opportunities of collaboration for summer partnerships for students in the MUS
Ensure that UM Summer Programs consistently generate measurable results, and that results are regularly and effectively communicated to the campus community in the form of annual reports and other reports and evaluations
Ensure that students and others seeking information about summer school receive assistance in a timely manner
Form and maintain regular summer council or advisory campus boards that includes diverse campus entities
Develop and run regular enrollment reports with live data on enrollment for summer term
Design and administer evaluation procedures for summer terms
Oversee liability insurance process for all summer camps at UM with the Risk Management Office
Oversee student registration process for summer terms in collaboration with the Office for Student Success
Write regular and timely press releases on summer terms to broadcast across the state, produce regular campus communication about the summer term, communicate with all campus community, press, alumni, and external stakeholders for details on summer terms and opportunities
Work with Enrollment Services and Montana Event Services to obtain contact and demographic information on summer campers from all individual summer camps for future recruitment, UM communication, and enrollment purposes
Perform other duties as assigned related to summer term

Position Details
Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, MUS Contract and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package

Required Skills
Working knowledge of current best practices in leading and developing a variety of summer programs targeting diverse student audiences
Working knowledge of higher education administration, organization, and budgets
Knowledge of trends and best practices in pre-collegiate, college-level, and continuing education summer programs
Ability to articulate plans, policies, and intricately detailed strategies with clarity and precision
Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment, fostering and developing working relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders throughout the academic community
Experience developing effective promotional campaigns
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
A steadfast commitment to diversity, maintaining an inclusive institutional environment, and a demonstrated ability to work closely and constructively with a wide variety of constituents
Knowledge of the daily operations of summer programming in a higher education setting
Understanding of University priorities surrounding student success and experiential learning
Required Experience
Bachelor’s degree in a related field and at least four (4) years of experience in higher education or a related field; or any combination of education and experience that provides the necessary competencies to adequately discharge the duties assigned to the position.
