Description:

The University of Plymouth is home to over 18,000 students, and a further 6,000 plus who are studying for a Plymouth degree at partner institutions in the UK and around the world. Recently ranked amongst the top 25 Institutions in the Times Higher Education Rankings, the University’s vision is to be a broad-based, research-intensive university, open to all who can benefit from its education, and delivering excellent interdisciplinary research, experiential education and civic engagement. The University is seeking to appoint a Head of the School of Psychology to provide bold and strategic leadership. Reporting to the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health, the Head of School role is responsible for formulating and operationalising academic strategy, ensuring appropriate plans and resources are in place for their delivery. The Faculty of Health represents 42% of the University’s activities and it is host to a tremendously diverse range of health and social care professional education programmes alongside psychology and biomedical sciences. At any one time, 4,500 professionals are typically in training across 60 programmes in six schools. We have a strong commitment to integrative working and interprofessional learning. The School of Psychology has a broad and well-established portfolio across the spectrum of psychology, which includes BPS accredited undergraduate programmes, a range of MSc programmes, a Clinical Associate Psychology programme, a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, and a substantial PhD community. Research-informed teaching and a strong focus on the student experience is at the heart of all we do. The School also has a strong track record in research excellence, which spans the breadth of the discipline. This work is supported by high quality research facilities both on campus in the Link Building, but also in the newly opened Brain Research and Imaging Centre, based at the nearby Derriford Science Park. In the last Research Excellence Framework assessment over 80% of our research outputs were rated as either international (3*) or world-leading (4*) quality, placing us in the top 20 nationally on this measure. The successful applicant will be an established professor and leader in their field. She, he or they will have considerable academic and personal credibility in a relevant discipline, as well as a commitment to working collaboratively and in partnership with staff and students across the School, the Faculty, and more widely. Strong leadership and management experience is important, as is an ability to engage staff, peers and students through collaborative work to deliver results. Candidates should have a clear understanding of the opportunities and challenges amidst the context of rapid change within the University and HE sector as a whole.
