General Description of Position:

Provide leadership and vision, strategic direction, budget development and oversight, and routine assessment and evaluation for a comprehensive Student Life program including student programming, student leadership development, student governance, student organizations, service engagement, and recreation and wellness. The director will advocate for the needs of all students and provide support in response to student issues and concerns. The director will collaborate with students, faculty, and staff to provide a student-centered environment that fosters intentional development through dynamic co-curricular programming and services, as an extension of the educational experience, to bolster campus traditions and pride, engage students with the College and community, support student retention and completion, and facilitate enhanced student learning.

The Director of Student Life & Student Advocate provides neutral and independent service to student seeking conflict resolution. Services provided include consultation, referrals, explanation of policies and procedures, review of applicable resolution methods, and other services.

Major Responsibilities:

• Responsible for the overall direction and supervision of a Student Life program and services Continuously assess needs of students and respond to the extent that their needs are addressed as best as facilities and resources permit.

• Advise and support the Campus Activities Board(s) to offer a vast array of student programming and events throughout the academic year.

• Provide campus leadership and coordination for all College-wide student life programs and events which could include, but are not limited to, Ivy Tech Days of Service, All-Indiana Community College Recognition event, Ivy Tech Student Leadership Academy, Ivy Tech Student Leadership Conference, Ivy Tech Recreation Tournaments, and Constitution Day.

• Guide and support of student organizations (honorary, professional, student media, and special interest). Facilitate the student organization establishment and registration and provide training and support for student organization officers and advisors.

• Advocate for student involvement in the college decision-making process and advise the student government association.

• Oversee all Student Life related budgets and serves as the chairperson for the Student Life Budget Committee. Oversee the expenditure processes and administer college policies and procedures in regards to distribution of funds to support student life. Develops annual student life operating budget and participates in the campus budget development processes.

• Employ, supervise and train all Student Life staff.

• Provide campus leadership and administration of the College’s student life management software.

• Conducts on-going assessment of student life programs and services and tracks student involvement in organizations, student life sponsored trips, college-wide student events, and athletics and produces a semester end report.

• Develop and utilize a communication plan that produces regular, on-going, campus-wide strategies to inform students and other college constituents about student life programs and services and opportunities for involvement including (but not limited to) a student life calendar of events highlighting college-wide, campus, and community events, printed publications, on-line tools, and social media.

• Develop and maintain appropriate relationships with other college departments. Educate and advocate within the campus and community about the mission and goals of Student Life. Build partnerships with faculty and staff and develop strategies to ensure that Student Life programs compliment the academic curriculum.

• Lead development of innovative strategies utilizing new technologies to provide the highest level of student contact and service to contribute to the college’s student success goals.

• Promote an environment and sense of college community that supports student engagement, student learning, college pride, and student success.

• Participate in professional development opportunities and professional organizations, as well as college-wide committees, etc.

• Engage in behaviors and conduct all activities with an appreciation and respect for diversity of people, styles, views; assist in the delivery of multicultural programming; develop student programming that promotes the personal growth of students by enhancing their understanding of their own and others culture, heritage and identities.

• Provides annual reports based on aggregated, de-identified data to the Vice Chancellor of Enrollment Services and Student Success, Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, and Director of Diversity, Equity and Belonging and Student Engagement to promote organizational growth through improvements to policies, systems and services to identify important themes relevant to campus culture and environment.

• Provides a neutral and independent environment for consultation. Listens to student concerns and discusses appropriate options for resolution. Does not advocate on behalf of any individual or entity within the organization and instead, seeks to identify processes and solutions that are fair and equitable to all parties.

• Refers students to appropriate campus resources. Coordinates resource use, as necessary.

• Collaborates with campus partners in campus-wide efforts to promote a campus culture and climate that is inclusive and equitable for all.

• Acts as a liaison between individuals, groups and campus administration by serving as a consultant, facilitator and informal mediator and identifies core issues and causes for conflict and recommends appropriate action steps toward a resolution.

• Consults with campus departments and academic units to understand and resolve complex problems through informal discussion. Develops cooperative strategies to de-escalate, mitigate, and prevent future conflicts.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree required, preferably in college student personnel, student development, higher education administration or related field.

Experience: Professional experience in Student Life is required with a minimum of 3 years of work experience in a higher education setting with evidence of increasing levels of responsibility. The ideal candidate will demonstrate knowledge and implementation of best practices in student programming, student leadership development, student governance, student organizations, service engagement, and recreation and wellness.

A genuine interest in working directly with students and knowledge of student development theory is essential. Excellent communication (written and verbal), time management skills, skills, and computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets, email, database applications, as well as online social media), as well as the ability to handle multiple assignments concurrently in a fast-pace environment is required. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in budget development and management, negotiation, and team building. Must demonstrate creativity and be able to work collaboratively with various college constituents. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in designing and building student programs and services that enhance student learning and engagement to the college with a tie to retention and completion. Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends. Community college experience a plus.
