The Finance department is responsible for providing a range of professional services to the University, including financial management and corporate governance, and procurement. Through their activities each team member contributes to a positive student experience, supporting students throughout their journey, from enquiry to alumni, providing a culture that engages students as genuine partners with the University of Plymouth. The post is part of the Business Support team within the Finance Service, comprising of Finance Business Partners, Management Accountants and Research Assistants, providing overall monitoring and maintenance of project accounts in line with sponsors’ funding guidelines and the University’s Financial Regulations. The team work closely with Faculties providing advice/guidance on processes. This role will also develop and maintain working relationships with external funding bodies, other universities, and other similar bodies, as appropriate and relationships with internal staff at all levels. You will contribute to ensure the suitability of financial systems, processes and reports for the University strategic needs while providing relevant timely financial information to support the University KPIs. You will be responsible for providing an efficient and effective service for the management of externally funded projects for both the University and UPEL, one of our subsidiary companies. Effective communication skills and people management is key to the success of this role as you will not only be managing a small team but also providing proactive advisory services for Senior Management, Principal Investigators, Project Leaders and Project Managers on the financial progress of projects. The role provides a link between Finance and all other parts of the University, working in partnership to ensure the achievement of successful post award funding, compliance with policies and adding value in all areas of work. The role will also be responsible for liaison with both internal and external auditors. You will provide financial information and forecasts to support University strategic planning processes, liaising with Finance Business Partners, as necessary, to ensure robustness. With the responsibility of managing this small team, you will have the ability to plan, prioritise and manage the teams’ workload to meet competing deadlines. You will also require the ability to create a respectful working relationship with team members and motivate them to achieve team goals. In addition to a professional accountancy qualification (or working towards with demonstrable experience) you will have advanced Excel skills, excellent communication skills and an ability to influence and negotiate.
