General Description of Position:

The High School Coordinator is tasked with maintaining and improving the high school equivalency (HSE) preparation program at Ivy Tech Community College Bloomington. This position is responsible for preparing students to take and pass the GED exams by effectively guiding students through a curriculum that is aligned with the respective HSE standards in the test content areas of language arts reading and writing, language, science, social studies, and mathematics. Curriculum will be provided, but may be constantly improved. A vital component of this position is to act as a cheerleader and advocate for the students in the program.

Major Responsibilities:

INSTRUCTION:

Provide classroom guidance and instruction for high school level math, reading, writing, social studies, and science designed to support students in passing the TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion) and HiSET (High School Equivalency Test).

Manage the learning environment with a student-centered focus. Implement diverse teaching and learning strategies that accommodate the learning styles of our students’ diverse backgrounds and learning needs.

Deliver instruction through various modes to engage diverse learning styles and preferences (including but not limited to; computer-assisted, web-based, distance learning, textbook learning, etc).

STUDENT SUPPORT AND RETENTION:

Assist students with special needs by aiding in the testing accommodations process.

Comply with all legal and ethical obligations, including FERPA, ADA, and other regulatory legislations.

Refer students to appropriate community and college resources, as needed.

Maintain and communicate standard documentation of attendance, assignments, testing results, practice test results, registrations, accommodations needs, etc.

Maintain strong relationships with students, contacting them as needed with the intent to promote persistence and retention.

PROFESSIONAL ENGAGEMENT:

Communicate with employer partners regarding student progress and need, as well as to improve and expand the HSE program.

Partner with Testing Services and external partners to schedule HSE assessments.

Attend daily staff meetings, biweekly employer partner meetings, monthly DWD meetings, and other meetings as necessary.

Attend professional development opportunities to enhance skills, instructional performance, and resources to meet the needs of students and the program.

Complete annual online training as required by the campus.

OTHER:

Technology commonly used: Google Drive, Microsoft Teams, Ivy Learn (Canvas), Outlook, Microsoft desktop computers and Macbook Air laptops with headphones/mouse/charger, classroom projector, Zoom, etc.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree

Proficiency in the use of technology for instruction and program purposes.

Commitment to integrate technology in the delivery of instruction to enhance and improve student learning outcomes.

Comfort with language arts reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, and science at K12 level. Mastery of the subjects is not necessary, but the ability to quickly learn is vital to help students on the spot.

Preferred Qualifications:

Teaching experience a bonus

Experience working with adult and non-traditional student populations a bonus

Relevant certification or degree in adult education, test subject areas, etc a bonus

Other Requirements:

Work Hours:

Monday through Friday work week.

Cohorts typically run in 8-week sessions and meet Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, with two different class times from 7:30 am - 10:00 am and 1:30 pm - 4:00 pm. These sessions generally follow the Ivy Tech semester calendar, with some differences.
