Job Description:
The Department of Human Services and Rehabilitation Studies at Assumption University seeks an adjunct instructor to teach one section of HSC 360 Legal and Ethical Aspects of Health Care during the Fall 2022 semester. This course is a requirement for the Health Sciences major. See course description below.
Adjuncts are welcomed as important contributors to the department and our students, and are provided with office space, email, voicemail, and support and resources needed for quality teaching. Successful candidates may have the possibility of teaching additional courses in subsequent semesters.
The Fall 2022 semester begins on Wednesday, August 24. Classes continue through Monday, December 5, though no classes are held on Labor Day (September 5) or during fall break (October 10-11) and Thanksgiving break (November 23-25). In addition to teaching classes, the instructor will be responsible for administering a final exam during the exam period (December 7-10) and submitting final grades by Tuesday, December 13.
The department chair will work with the adjunct instructor and the registrar's office to select the day and time the class meets. Ideally, it will meet in the late afternoon or early evening once a week for 2.5 hours or twice a week (MW or TTh) for 75 minutes.
Enrollment is capped at thirty students.
HSC 360 LEGAL AND ETHICAL ASPECTS OF HEALTH CARE
This course will address relevant legal and ethical issues in current healthcare practice and systems. The course will provide an introduction to a broad scope of legal principles and obligations required by health care professionals and consider the professional ethics involved in modern health care delivery. Primarily, federal health care policies that will impact contemporary health providers in their everyday work will be reviewed. The rights and responsibilities of organizations, health care providers, and patients will be examined. Additionally, contemporary ethical dilemmas will be explored along with developing an understanding of how ethical issues are resolved using ethics committees in modern health systems.
Requirements:
Applicants with a JD or a doctorate (PhD, DrPH, DSc) in Health Sciences, Public Health, or a related field are preferred. ABD graduate students with prior teaching experience will also be considered, as will those with a terminal master's degree (MS or MPH) in Health Sciences or Public Health and prior teaching experience.
