Suffolk University\u2019s Upward Bound Program is an intensive six week educational experience offered to a select number of Boston Public School students. The goal of the program is to assist these students in achieving positive post-secondary outcomes through academic tutoring, test prep and concentrated academic classes. Summer Instructors are responsible for teaching during Upward Bound\u2019s six-week summer component. The goal of curriculum design is to be responsive to DOE curriculum requirements for the coming academic year.Summer 2023 Theme: \u201CThe Power of Your Voice\u201DThis summer we are focusing on the role the power of your voice. Students will explore the art of storytelling: the art of telling their story. As our youth develop a sense of who they are, it is crucial that we support their social-emotional growth and equip them with the proper skill set for them to battle the challenges they will encounter on a college campus. Foreign Language Instructor:\u2022 Introduction to FrenchThis is a beginners level course to introduce students to the French language and the culture behind it. Dates: (Dates are subject to change depending on Boston Public Schools Last Day)\u2022 Staff Orientation (June 12th)\u2022 Student Team Building Day (TBD)\u2022 July 3rd - August 11th Hours: Please reach out to the program for more information Primary Responsibilities:\u2022 Develop curriculum according to Upward Bound program guidelines for assigned class. Design class with subject matter that reflects current high school content as specified in MA Department of Education (DOE) curriculum frameworks and to meet learning outcomes.\u2022 Facilitate a course with a cohort of a diverse population of students and respond in an appropriate manner to behavior and student concern as well as collaborating with Teaching Assistant (TA) and Upward Bound (UB)staff. \u2022 Respect Upward Bound summer policies and procedures: possessing a thorough understanding of the Upward Bound Program\u2019s overall goals and assist with a program of study that will promote success and generate confidence for students.\u2022 Develop and administer pre and post-testing to students at the beginning and end of the summer program. Prepare and submit daily homework assignments, missing homework assignment sheets and daily attendance sheets. Submit progress reports on each student\u2019s performance on a weekly basis or as necessary.Requirements/Qualifications (examples):\u2022 B.A. or B.S. degree in the relevant field. Master\u2019s degree preferred.\u2022 A teaching philosophy that embraces the belief that all students can succeed given the appropriate environment and curriculum.\u2022 Demonstrated ability to effectively develop a curriculum that is engaging and relevant.\u2022 Appropriate Massachusetts teaching credential plus one year of high school or college classroom experience.\u2022 Instructors must be committed to Upward Bound\u2019s goals and objectives and exhibit qualities necessary for working with students and parents.\u2022 Must be highly-motivated, energetic, and engaging.\u2022 Experience working with a diverse population of students is preferred.
