Job Description:

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Reporting directly to the President, the Vice President for Academic Affairs / Chief Academic Officer (CAO) provides leadership and direction to the academic departments and strategic counsel to workforce development and community education programs. The position oversees the Dean of Faculty, the Associate Dean of Nursing, and the Career Services/CTE Grant Coordinator, with a strong advisory and coordination role with the Director of Workforce Development.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Serve as a member of the President's senior staff and as part of internal shared governance, advocating for the needs and interests of the faculty, academic programming, workforce training, and skills development of students and program participants; leveraging data on College program trends, keeping abreast of current awareness in academic innovations, and relying on evidence to help inform institutional decision making with regard to instruction, learning outcomes, and responsiveness to local needs both current and future. Contribute ideas for the advancement of the College and its graduates.

Represent the president and College at various activities across the Commonwealth, in national dialogue on higher education, and in the community. The CAO will make regular presentations on the academic program to the College, the senior staff, and the Board of Trustees as requested.

Develop and maintain partnerships with the business community, government agencies, think tanks, high schools, other community colleges, and universities to ascertain (1) skills needed by local and global industry, (2) learning outcomes required of community college graduates to progress to further education, and (3) evidence-based instructional and delivery methods that will ensure the college operates on best practices. The CAO should also apply current awareness to academic innovation and planning, while encouraging the faculty to experiment with methods that show promise to increase learning outcomes and work readiness, along with retention and completion; wherever practicable, the CAO should work with the Director of Institutional Effectiveness in developing and applying evaluation methodology to such pedagogical innovations to develop a strong evidence base for decision making.

Collaborate with the Chief Student Affairs Officer and all relevant senior staff in the development, operation, and coordination of student engagement activities, skills development efforts, faculty professional development, and strategic planning to ensure institutional effectiveness through knowledge sharing and inter-departmental collaboration.

Oversee all credit-bearing academic programs and validation of workforce training activities; these include the selection and evaluation of faculty / instructors, as well as summary recommendations regarding program offerings and staffing levels of the academic branch of the College.

Oversee the planning, development, and implementation of academic and co-curricular programs in order to provide a rich and supportive student learning environment.

Collaborate with deans, faculty and staff to develop, implement and refine an assessment model for all academic and workforce development programs.

Participate in developing and implementing the College's strategic plan, particularly in areas related to academic program review / evaluation, allocation of financial resources for academic programs, curricular and program changes, faculty and staff development.

Ensure the institutional focus on multiculturalism and diversity is reflected throughout the academic program.

Interpret and implement national, state and local policies relating to academic affairs; including regional and specialized program accreditation.

Oversee the onboarding, employment progress, and evaluation of all academic staff in accordance with collective bargaining agreements and/or personnel policy handbooks in consultation with the College president and the Director of Human Resources.

Identify grants and help the College to develop proposals to enrich and support innovative academic and training programs.

Plan, develop, and implement the academic affairs and student affairs annual and long-range budgets.

Ensure College preparedness for a range of accreditation procedures, including NECHE regional accreditation, and specialized accreditation in key academic areas including nursing, allied health, and other disciplines with accreditation requirements.

Perform other duties as assigned at the direction of the College president.

Requirements:

Master's degree required along with an earned doctorate or meaningful progress toward doctoral degree.

Demonstrated leadership that inspires trust, supports transparency, and fosters collegiality and collaboration across campus and in the community.

Achievement in higher education as an academic administrator.

Full or part-time teaching experience in higher education.

Commitment to the comprehensive community college mission of open access.

Knowledge of emergent trends in higher education that affect community colleges.

Demonstrated leadership in the integration of instruction and services to students as a way to create and maintain a supportive student-centered learning environment.

Record of successful experience in creating and leading inclusive and diverse organizations.

PREFERRED CHARACTERISTICS:

Demonstrated leadership academic administration

Record of success fostering productive internal and external relationships with various stakeholders and constituents in a small college environment.

Experience with emerging pedagogy, including distance learning.

Experience working in a shared governance and collective bargaining environment.

Demonstrated ability to assess internal and external initiatives in context of college mission, culture and competing demands.
