We are seeking to appoint an experienced Theatre technician with an understanding of Immersive Technologies for production and immersive performance work. Our technical team supports and enables students in one-to-one and group scenarios, demonstrates technical production skills as key to the making process, and ensures that safe working practices are formulated and followed. Our team provides exceptional standards of professional technical support to all incoming artists & companies as part of our theatre visits programme; we take great pride in our desire to nurture excellent relationships with experienced practitioners from across the industry. We are looking for a positive, inspirational and resourceful individual who can develop dynamic working relationships with students, academics and our professional partners. With a proven professional track record in technical theatre, with evidence of lighting design and lighting desk, digital and AV skills, Musical Theatre production or Immersive theatre, you will have an excellent eye for detail & a passion for outstanding production standards. The role will work with our Immersive Media Lab to help and inspire students in the possibilities of encompassing new technologies with immersive theatre production. An understanding using Motion Capture: Ideally using the Vicon system, setting up actor markers to the template, calibration of system and subject using Shogun Live and Retargeting an FBX using Vicon Post software will be an advantage. An understanding of rigging 3D models in Autodesk Maya to comply with Motion capture is direrable. As a technician at the University of Plymouth, you will be expected to support the provision of outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research and knowledge transfer. To support skills development amongst the University’s students concerning both taught subjects and research. To ensure that technical support is of the highest standard to enable and enhance the employability of our students and the reputation of the Faculty, School and University, and to support external and visiting artists and programmes. This position has a flexible working pattern involving evening, weekend and daytime curricula; this will be agreed upon with you and the technical manager. You will work within a customer-focused, cost-effective, efficient support service and have experience in this environment. You will have a particular eye for detail and systems improvement, aligning this work with the wider student experience. As such, flexibility, adaptability, and resilience will be critical. You will need to be able to lift and assemble heavy equipment in accordance with manual handling guidelines. You must also be comfortable working at height regularly, following health and safety guidelines. You will have first-class communication skills and be able to demonstrate experience of working in a similar environment, liaising with all stakeholders in the faculty. It will also be essential that you possess excellent organisational and interpersonal skills, pay high attention to detail and be adaptable to the demands of working in this facility. You will need to have the flexibility to fit within a schedule of work that can include weekend and evening support; this will be organised through collaboration with technical staff and the technical manager.
