Based in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences comprises four distinct areas across the subjects of chemistry, earth sciences, environmental sciences and geography, each delivering exceptional teaching, support and research. All our degree programmes are professionally accredited and designed with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals in mind. Staff and students work and study in the stunning natural landscape of south west England. Our national parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, characterful towns and cities, and 650 mile-long coastline provide the backdrop from which we address global sustainability challenges on land and at sea. An interdisciplinary team of world-class academics undertake teaching and research focused on challenges including climate change, natural hazards, social justice, pollution, energy transitions, land- and seascape conservation and the sensitive development of natural resources. The School holds an Athena SWAN Bronze award demonstrating the University’s ongoing commitment to advancing gender equality and success for all. The School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences wishes to appoint a Professor of Physical Geography. You will work within the area of physical geography, attracting research funding from prestigious sources and producing high-quality research outputs and / or impact. The post holder will demonstrate skills in research leadership, working with colleagues to maintain and develop high quality, sustainable, and inter-disciplinary research initiatives. A key aspect of the role will be promoting research coherence and inclusivity, nurturing and developing ECRs where appropriate. Teaching will be largely into undergraduate and postgraduate Geography programmes, with the potential to expand into at least one other of our programme areas (Chemistry, Environmental Science and Geology). We encourage applicants both from within and beyond our existing areas of strength (e.g. healthy landscapes, planetary health, sustainable environmental management). The role is based in the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences. Our research and teaching activities address issues of sustainability on land and at sea and we have an enviable record of success. Our 50 academic staff enjoy excellent support from well-resourced laboratory facilities (including 16 technicians). As well as depth and breadth in and across our subject areas, we have strong academic links across the institution with for example the University’s Sustainable Earth and Marine Institutes. Our staff members hold research income in excess of £13m from all major funding providers, and teach around 1,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students. Have a proven track record of developing, executing and leading high quality and impactful research, supported by grant funding from prestigious sources and published in high quality, peer-reviewed journals. Have ambitious, deliverable plans for the future research success of themselves and their colleagues Provide excellent teaching informed by professional practice, scholarship and their own research experience.
