Under the direction of the Associate Director of New Student and Family Programs, the New Student Success Specialist will assist the department to support the transition of new undergraduate students and their families by providing oversight of the Pack Advisor program, support the initiatives of Student Affairs and connect with campus partners.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Student Staff Leadership (45%)
Recruitment, select, train and supervise Pack Advisors (PAs)
Provide ongoing mentoring to support the development of the PAs
Provide feedback and coaching to improve performance as needed
Program Development (10%)
Work with the Associate Director of New Student and Family Programs (NSFP) to develop operational and programmatic goals, objectives and key performance indicators
Research best practices for supporting undergraduate student persistence through their first year (Freshmen, Running Start and Transfer students)
Work with campus stakeholders to connect packs to programs resources that support students transition into UW Tacoma, persistence through their first year, and sense of belonging
Work with the Associate Director of NSFP to design how PAs will interact with students as orientation leaders
Build programs that reinforce what students learn in orientation programs
Program Delivery (35%)
Deliver orientation and first year persistence programming
Execute day-to-day management of PA programs and activities including coordinating resource, administrative and operational functions
Assist in the enhancement and implementation of operational and programmatic goals and objectives
Track and report on key performance indicators
Budget Oversight (5%)
Monitor PA budget status
Work with the Associate Director to approve expenditures and ensure compliance with fiscal policies and procedures
Other duties as assigned (5%)
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree in education, communications or a related field with 1-2 years of experience in developing and implementing undergraduate student programs
Experience with student supervision
Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to work within a multi-cultural environment; Must be detail-oriented and organized
Proven ability to work independently and in teams; Ability to use independent judgment in working with faculty, staff, students, parents and families and represent the University appropriately
Demonstrated strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects of different scales
Demonstrate cultural competency and commitment to working with diverse, multicultural, first generation, and students with disabilities
Experience working with a variety of university constituents including students, faculty, staff, administrators, parents/family members, community members and other external constituents
Proficiency in performing complex functions using MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and social media
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRED:
An understanding of the UW Tacoma culture and student population
Two years of experience managing student employees, implementing and assessing programming for a targeted audience
Higher education experience in student affairs or related discipline
Knowledge and application of student development theory
Experience with university retention efforts
Experience building partnerships and collaborating across university departments
