Interview Date:
Thursday 28 April 2022
The Department of Geography is rapidly developing its research profile in the areas of meteorology and climate science and has a very active Lincoln Climate Research Group. This includes a new NERC-funded 2.5-year project on the
Causes and Impacts of Greenland Atmospheric Blocking Changes (GreenBlock)
, led by Edward Hanna, Professor of Climate Science and Meteorology. The project aims to provide a major advance in the understanding of the causes of atmospheric circulation changes (specifically changes in blocking or persistent high air pressure) over Greenland, their relation to variations in the North Atlantic atmospheric and oceanic circulation systems, their consequences for climate change and extreme weather conditions over Greenland and the wider North Atlantic/Northwest Europe/UK region, and their impacts on Greenland Ice Sheet mass loss and global sea-level rise. We expect that our results from this climatically crucial part of the North Atlantic will provide a major step forward for understanding the causes and impacts of Greenland Blocking and help guide the next generation of global climate models. GreenBlock involves close collaboration with Co-Investigators and Partners at the Universities of Exeter, Liège, Oslo, Oxford, Reading, Sheffield, the Met Office and the National Oceanography Centre.
We have an exciting opportunity for a PDRA with experience of statistical analysis and/or modelling, and preferably some meteorology/climate background, to join our growing team. The PDRA will work directly on the NERC project to help push back the frontiers of knowledge and understanding in the topical and high-impact area of Greenland climate change. Although the NERC project is the primary focus, the successful candidate may suggest their own ideas or topic of research to co-develop an idea that could lead to further funding. We expect the project to begin on 1 July 2022.
The Research Associate is responsible for conducting research, publication and outreach activities on the project, as directed by the Principal Investigator (E. Hanna). During this appointment the Research Associate will work closely with the PI, Co-Investigators, Project Partners and other PDRAs on the project to:
Determine how well current state-of-the-science global climate models represent recent seasonal changes in Greenland Blocking, particularly in summer.
Decipher the causes and impacts of extreme Greenland Blocking episodes and changes, emphasising the links between weather and climate timescales, and assess the effect of climate-model biases on model simulation of Greenland Blocking variability and trends.
Produce observationally constrained projections of seasonal Greenland Blocking to year 2100 and associated storylines of their possible impacts on North Atlantic/European weather and climate ,
and on the Greenland Ice Sheet melt and global sea-level rise.
