The **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. Center for Global Health Practice and Impact (CGHPI) serves countries to improve their population health and well-being and to safeguard against health-related threats by advancing the use of evidence and human-centered enterprise architecture on the path towards achieving equity and social justice. To achieve this mission, we catalyze the uptake, spread, and implementation of innovations; triangulate data from different sources, and tailor visualization of the information for each audience; design and implement integrated service delivery models; support communities of practice to inform policy and practice through efficient data use and horizontal and vertical collaboration; disseminate best practices and evidence globally through open source learning networks; build global, collaborative, multi-disciplinary, and interprofessional networks; undertake research that is informed by local needs; and invest in local leadership to own, provide oversight, and sustain implemented interventions. The Center operates in more than 7 countries and domestically within the United States and continues to expand. To advance its mission and in line with growth plans, the Center seeks a Director
to lead its Epidemiology, Surveillance and Data Science
portfolio.
Reporting to the CGHPI Director, the Director, Epidemiology, Surveillance and Data Science
will own the Center for Global Health Practice and Impact (CGHPI)
epidemiological and surveillance technical assistance impact measurement strategy and execution. This positions also functions as the leading Center authority on matters of epidemiology, epidemiologic surveillance and broader data science across a broad range of diseases and associated risk factors addressed within public health programs - domestically in the U.S.A and globally in several countries where the Center is engaged. The Director, Epidemiology, Surveillance and Data Science will primarily be responsible for supervising the work of epidemiologists, biostatisticians, health technology specialists and health informatics professional staff.
The position holder will direct and lead the design, development, coordination, implementation, and management of complex public health epidemiological studies and surveillance systems and ensure that program and project goals and objectives are consistent, compatible, and complementary. The Director, ESDS will lead the analysis and evaluation of epidemiological and surveillance data and establish standards of practice, protocols, and policies for the epidemiology and surveillance-related programs and the conduct of research projects. The position holder will lead proposals, projects, and studies of epidemiological nature and general design of epidemiological and health services outcomes studies in collaboration with other science and technical leaders within the Center.
Essential Responsibilities
The Director, ESDS will: Oversee and manage surveillance and epidemiologic programs, studies and activities for the prevention and control of communicable and chronic diseases, injuries, and other conditions of public health significance.
Manage collection, analysis, and provision of epidemiologic and other data to guide program implementation.
Work with existing program faculty and staff in Washington and in the field offices to build critical epidemiology and data science skills
Serve as epidemiology thought leader on existing and future surveillance and other public health programs
Provide technical support to the development of country-specific workplans for surveillance activities under global health security and for routine case-based surveillance
Identify gaps in core functions of human and animal disease surveillance systems.
Build capacity in country-level, regional or global disease surveillance staff by sharing new knowledge/evidence and best practices with the project team and partners.
Provide technical support to target countries and provide feedback to project implementation teams on use of data to improve program performance
Develop methods sections of research studies and program evaluation protocols for IRB approval
Lead and participate in manuscript development for publication in peer-reviewed journals
Participate in proposal preparation supporting the business development team
Work Interactions
The Director (ESD) will report to the Center Director of CGHPI, and work closely with the Center COO/Deputy Director, Principal Investigators, Field Teams Technical Project Managers, Technical Portfolio Leads, and Faculty and Staff in other Departments at GU,
Requirements and Qualifications
A Doctorate degree specializing in Epidemiology
Additional training in Data Science and Big Data Analytics will be an added advantage
Project experience leading epidemiologic and/or public health or health-focused analytic projects or data analysis for at least 5 years.
At least 5 years of experience leading public health surveillance initiatives in the United States plus at least one other country
A minimum of 5 years of experience in designing and leading epidemiological clinical and public health studies for infectious and non-communicable diseases of public health concern including, HIV/AIDS, STIs, Hepatitis, etc.
Experience as a funded Principal Investigator and record of successful publications in peer-reviewed journals
A familiarity with US Government Agencies that fund public health and research programs.
Analysis and data management skills as well as demonstrated analytical skills and experience in identifying and evaluating best practices and state-of-the-art approaches to be utilized by public health projects
Experience working in global health and in developing countries
Experience working with statistical databases (STATA, SAS, SPSS etc
Proficiency in French language is an added advantage
