invites applications for an
Academic Advisor II
. This position will supervise the day-to-day management of the academic advising functions of the SLHOS School and serves as the primary academic advisor from the point of entry in education until the student completes the associated multiple degree and certificate programs we offer: Bachelor of Arts, SLPA Certificate, Leveling Certificate. All programs are offered on campus and online with stackable options.
The SLHOS advisor independently provides comprehensive academic advising and programming that supports the academic success of students and serves as the central resource for faculty within the SLHOS school. Duties include, but are not limited to: recruitment and retention activities such as UM Days, Transfer Days, meetings with prospective students and parents and Welcome feast; represent the SLHOS via presentations at meetings, programs, and university activities; collaboratively work with recruitment, orientation and retention offices; compile data and present reports; create projects in line with SLHOS mission statement and initiatives issued by administration; collaborate with other academic departments regarding requirements, transfer credits and substitutions; respond and resolve initial inquiries; write recommendations; work with students matters regarding reinstatement plans, academic probation and remediation, drop/withdrawal petitions and conduct/behavior issues; evaluate transcripts; refer clientele to office and campus resources as appropriate; manage front desk reception student employees, work closely with the SLHOS Online Coordinator to scale UG programming appropriately; and perform other duties as assigned.
The individual in this position will be expected to:
Serve as the primary comprehensive academic advising contact for students in the School of Speech, Language, Hearing, & Occupational Sciences (SLHOS).
Responsible for planning, coordinating and providing comprehensive advising to students and monitoring progress, GPA, completion of Core, and progress towards major, SLPA, and Leveling.
Respond to telephone, email, and walk-in inquiries concerning major requirements, the SLHOS program, field experiences, and graduate programs.
Responsible for planning and coordinating recruitment and retention activities
Coordinates and shares advising information with faculty and staff, alumni, students, parents, and the campus community, including faculty from secondary major/minor areas.
Update and maintain plans of study
Work with Department Chair and Department and Finance Manager to develop advising materials
Develop advising budget recommendations
Compile and disseminate annual student evaluations of the Advising Program.
Participate in university advising meetings and activities as appropriate
Provide smooth transition between multiple stackable degree programs
Keep all information in software systems up to date
Develop a comprehensive plan to assess the advising process to establish dynamic benchmarks and outcomes based on student, staff, and faculty input.
Disseminate course equivalency worksheets & compile upon approval/disapproval
Support fully distance students through advising, educational guidance, class planning, recommending courses, meeting with students, recruitment and retention
Collect CSD course enrollment data
Including specific class enrollment, student status, etc.
Work closely with SLHOS Online Coordinator
Partner with UMOnline to secure the best student support & success for distance students
Accurately document student advising in university systems
Participate in relevant School and College committees to ensure student success
Ensure implementation of policies and practices within the School of SLHOS
Supervise matriculation, convocation and graduation events within the school and college as appropriate
SLPA licensure liaison- planning and pointing students to resources
HES data/CAA data reporting on undergrad numbers
Cohort coding in banner
Communicate and partner with Registrar’s, business services, and financial aid
Develop a comprehensive plan to assess the advising process to establish dynamic benchmarks
Serve on School committees related to curriculum development
Required Skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Knowledge of FERPA and HIPAA compliance laws
Ability to adapt to changing priorities throughout the academic cycle

Minimum Required Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in a related field
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of Banner Student Information System
Proficient knowledge of UM academic policies and procedures
Knowledge of university catalog, resources, and general education requirements.
Knowledge of current advising practices and FERPA regulations.
