The person in the Assistant Controller position will be responsible for directing monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting transactions, reconciliations, and closing processes. They will be responsible to ensure the appropriateness of systems to support compliance functions and monitor compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and reporting requirements, supervise report preparation and submission in compliance with applicable laws and other mandated reporting requirements, assist in planning and completion of major recurring or other assigned special departmental projects such as external audits, year-end closing process, UBIT, and CHE budget reporting.
They will also coordinate preparation and completion of major financial reports (financial statements and operational reports) monthly, quarterly and at year-end. The person in this position will maintain bank relationships and oversee the cash management policies of the University on investments and cash flow to ensure appropriated returns and continued operations. They will oversee the preparation of finance and facilities (as it relates to purchasing) motions for action by the Board of Regents and ensure financial statements and reports, cash management reports, and other related reports are shared with the board upon request and at each board meeting. They will prepare and present financial reports, KPIs, and detailed analysis to support the fiduciary responsibility of the Board of Regents and University leadership.
Other responsibilities include developing and enforcing policies for fixed asset inventory tracking, coordinating the annual fixed asset inventory process, and reporting the results to management. They will oversee the financial operations of the University’s Foundation to the extent that those operations intersect with the University business.
The person in this position will help ensure integrity of the University financial data. They will maintain and modify the University’s FOAPAL structure as necessary, manage the daily reconciliation to the State of Montana accounting system (SABHRS), and provide support to the University’s budgeting function for scholarships, plant funds, and restricted funds as required. They will provide management support to the campus, the Controller, Vice President and Associate Vice President of Operations and Finance, and various State agencies.

Position Details
Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, MUS Contract and includes a comprehensive and competitive

Salary for this position is $90,000 per year commensurate with qualifications.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Business or Accounting
Ten (10) or more years of experience with an organization operating in a complex financial environment
Prior supervisory and management experience
Experience with fund balance or non-profit accounting
Experience in implementing effective internal control measures and processes
Preferred Qualifications
CPA certification or related Master’s Degree
Related work in higher education
Experience working with GASB
