We are looking for an exceptional
Assistant/Associate Research Professor
(non-tenure track) to join our team and be an active part of new and unique initiatives focused on medical devices and biotechnological innovation. The candidate is expected to have a proven track record of team leadership, intra- and/or extra-mural funding, and a strong working knowledge of biomaterials chemistry, processing and characterization, drug delivery systems and drug release kinetics, in addition to a solid understanding of biological systems.
The primary responsibility of the Research Professor will be to help lead an active research group and to participate fully in the educational and research activities associated with the Serban Lab. The Research Professor will actively collaborate with other research groups and institutions to conduct field expanding research.
Position responsibilities
Supervise research projects and mentor junior staff and students
Conduct and participate in the planning and development of a variety of research projects
Collaborate on appropriate group projects as assigned by leadership
Collaborate and interact with investigators at other local, regional, national, and international institutions
Foster and maintain collegial interactions with and supervision of technical team members, students, etc.
Produce and analyze experimental data, write progress reports, write manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and prepare abstracts for presentation of results at local, national, and international scientific meetings
Independently and in collaboration with other investigators develop, write, and submit grant proposals for intra- and extra-mural funding
Independently and in collaboration with other investigators develop and maintain a vigorous, cutting-edge, externally funded program in relevant research
Education, Experience and Certifications
PhD or equivalent degree from an accredited institution required.
A distinguished record of publications, track record of external funding, and national recognition and leadership required.
History of external funding as Principal Investigator and industry experience preferred.
Position Details
Position is non-tenure track, 12-month, faculty, full-time, 1.0 FTE, and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package

About the Serban Lab and UM
The Serban Lab
is led by Dr. Monica Serban, who joined UM in 2015 after spending close to 5 years in the medical device industry. Her research
also gained national attention recently when was the subject of a press release from the American Chemical Society’s (ACS) News Service Weekly PressPac
. She has 15 patents/patent applications and numerous peer reviewed scientific publications. The lab currently has several funded projects focused on translational research and commercialization of developed intellectual property. The lab culture is focused on collegiality, collaboration, efficient communication and team spirit. The group is seeking to expand their research focus and contribute to the mission of the University though new innovation-focused initiatives.
