Profile

Educational Developer: Hybrid Pedagogy Focus, Stearns Center for Teaching and Learning
As part of a set of institutional commitments to transformative, inclusive, accessible, high-impact learning, **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***.’s Stearns Center for Teaching and Learning invites applications for an Educational Developer with a specialization in hybrid and cross-modal pedagogies, course design, and faculty development.
This position will provide broad support for faculty as they continue to adapt their teaching to take advantage of opportunities to combine in-room, synchronous video, and asynchronous online learning environments, and thus to support Mason’s “Portfolio of Choice” goal of engaging students in whatever course modality—or combination of modalities—best supports their learning.
**MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason’s academically and culturally inclusive environment.
About the Position:
Pandemic teaching in the past two years has sped up the transition from categorizing college courses as either “in person” or “online” to understanding that good teaching requires faculty to strategically integrate modalities to best enable student engagement and learning. This position will provide faculty-development leadership for the creation, implementation, and assessment of programs for faculty to develop and hone skills for teaching across multiple modalities. The position will liaise with our instructional design team members who are responsible for building asynchronous courses, and will focus on extending best practices in online course design to larger cohorts of faculty who are constructing cross-modal courses. Finally, this position will support the ongoing activities and mission of the Stearns Center. The position will report to the Director for Teaching Excellence within the Stearns Center.
Responsibilities:
In partnership with the Stearns Center team, develop, implement, and assess programs to enhance “hybrid” teaching—from “in-classroom” or “on-video” courses that lean gently on an asynchronous LMS to fully flipped or alternating-modality courses that regularly cross modalities—at all course levels and among all instructor types (graduate instructor, adjunct faculty, and full-time faculty);
Develop and share accessible resources to help faculty improve the design and implementation of inclusive, engaging, aligned courses that integrate multiple learning modalities;
Collaborate with college and school leaders in designing and assessing local support for faculty that is related to hybrid and cross-modal teaching; and
Provide hybrid-teaching resources that integrate with ongoing Stearns Center initiatives (e.g., Continuing Professional Development workshops, Course ReDesign Academies, Faculty Orientations, Writing Across the Curriculum, Innovations in Teaching and Learning Conference, and Anti-Racist and Inclusive Excellence programming).
Required Qualifications:
A Ph.D. or Ed.D., or any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Ph.D. or Ed.D;
Some (generally at least two years) college-level teaching experience; and
Some (generally at least two years) leadership or strong active role in hybrid or online faculty development programming.
Expected Qualifications:
The candidate should be able to provide evidence of the following:
Demonstrated success working with faculty on teaching and learning approaches in relation to issues of hybrid and/or cross-modal course design;
Knowledge and understanding of current professional development approaches specifically around the development, implementation, and assessment of hybrid and/or cross-modal courses;
A strong commitment to educational excellence and to new ideas and approaches for strengthening teaching and student learning;
A record of teaching excellence as an instructional faculty member, including experience teaching in multiple and/or blended modalities;
Demonstrated expertise in promoting teaching effectiveness and quality course design in undergraduate and graduate programs;
General knowledge and understanding of current educational practices in faculty and graduate student development, teaching, and assessment;
Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build and maintain collaborative and confidential relationships; and
We seek candidates who are flexible, well-organized, inquisitive, detail-oriented, creative, ethical, and prepared to thrive in our busy, diverse, and collaborative environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Candidates will be particularly competitive for this position if they have experience/expertise in one or more of the following: designing and/or leading structured, cohort-based learning experiences for faculty; designing and teaching fully flipped or alternating-modality courses; research or assessment projects directly related to issues of cross-modal course design; and/or teaching in health science, technology, and/or business/management courses.
