Assistant Professor of Theatre in Costume Technology
. This position will oversee and manage all Costume Shop operations, oversee construction of costumes for all productions in Theatre and Dance, and teach assigned courses in costume technology. UM hosts the only public undergraduate and graduate degrees in Dance and Theatre in the state. Curricula include BA, BFA, MA, and MFA degrees in Acting, Costuming, Dance, Lighting, Musical Theatre Performance, Pre-Dance Therapy, Scenery, Sound, Stage Management, and Theatre Education. Theatre and Dance personnel consist of twelve full-time faculty and three professional staff. Performance spaces include a 500-seat proscenium theatre, a multiform theatre, and two dance studios. Support spaces include scenery, props, costumes, lighting, and sound production shops. Montana Repertory Theatre, a professional company in residence, is integrated with the theatre training and professional preparation programs. Theatre programs are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST).
The responsibilities of this tenure-track position include teaching, research/creative scholarship, and service as defined in the Theatre and Dance Unit Standards for advancement. A robust, ongoing portfolio of research and creative scholarship is required for promotion and tenure. Workload is assigned by the Dean in collaboration with the School Director and the Head of Design and Technology. The successful candidate will possess strong organizational skills and the ability to work with designers/technicians from a wide range of experience including student employees, faculty, guest artists, and over-hire positions. Regular responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Teaching all levels of construction and patterning techniques.
Maintaining a regular work schedule and presence in the costume shop during student work hours in coordination with the Head of Design and Technology.
Hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of student employees in the costume shop.
Developing and overseeing shop budgets to ensure production timeline and shop-budget compliance with School Production Manager and production costume designer(s).
Planning, organizing and supervising daily activities and costume builds for each production in order to establish a safe and efficient learning environment.
Attending production and staff meetings, dress parade, and dress rehearsals to coordinate designer's final needs and supervise and train wardrobe crew.
Overseeing shop equipment, supplies, dry cleaning, laundering, storage, and maintenance of stock and rentals as well as donations of clothing and materials to the shop.
Participating in mentorship of student designers/technicians in conjunction with costume design and technology faculty, including oversight of fittings.
Designing costumes for productions as necessary in consultation with the Design and Technology Faculty.
