The project also includes labs at University Florida, Boise State University and University Wisconsin-Madison. The post-doctoral position will be based at **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. but work within the larger team investigating successional processes in the microbial communities associated with carnivorous pitcher plants. The plants host diverse microbiomes as part of a detrital food web of invertebrates. The project will employ interdisciplinary approaches including molecular genetics, biochemistry, ecological modeling, multivariate statistics and biogeographical analysis to characterize microbiome succession, functions and host interactions in this novel plant-microbe model system.
The researcher will contribute to intercontinental comparison of microbiome succession in field populations, but also run manipulative field experiments at the UWM field site at Cedarburg Bog to examine host effects on microbial community composition and functions using genetic analysis, hydrolytic enzyme activities and community metabolic profiling. There will be some flexibility for the researcher to explore research within areas related to the project.
The project at UWM will contribute to a multi-site, intercontinental comparison of microbiome succession in field populations, as well as specific manipulative experiments based around how host status influences microbial composition and functions. Summer fieldwork at UWM’s field station at Cedarburg Bog will be an important part of the research project. The post-doc will examine bacterial community composition and functions, using biochemical enzyme activity assays, and measurements of nutrient transformations, and also prepare samples for 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing and metagenome and metatranscriptome analysis.
