invites applications for a
Middle School Coordinator (MSC)
( Program Manager)
to oversee student recruitment from selected middle schools as well as staff recruitment, training and supervision of summer residential staff, summer instructors, academic year tutor/advisors and other staff as our program continues to grow. This individual will manage the implementation of the project’s activities, goals, and objectives as guided by associated stakeholders, MT AIMS staff, and University policies. They will plan and delegate relevant services for primarily Native American K-12 students for the MT AIMS Gatherings program. This individual will also conduct summative and formative evaluations of program performance. They will maintain financial oversight by keeping track of expenditures. They will also maintain program student database and assist the associate director (AD) with submission of annual performance reports and maintain the program records required for MT AIMS funders and UM compliance. This individual will plan and implement program promotional campaign, and represent programs in national, state, campus, community and middle school venues. They will also travel to students’ communities and schools to conduct visits on a monthly and/or quarterly basis. The middle school coordinator (MSC) is directly responsible for staff recruitment, training, supervision and evaluation of temporary summer residential staff, summer instructors, and academic year tutor/advisors.
This position requires incumbent to develop an understanding of resources available to attract staff who are members of protected classes of employees and an understanding of HRS policies. They will also develop a thorough and extensive knowledge of governing regulations and their compliancy requirements and program responsibilities established in funded applications. This individual will develop an understanding of UM Business Services, HRS, and other UM departmental policies. They will also develop a knowledge of academic assessment practices and interpretations of assessment data to improve program services. This individual will also develop a knowledge of state and local resources for development of academic program services—specifically Montana postsecondary majors and career opportunities. They will gain the ability to conduct a comprehensive evaluation model and will implement and interpret academic, career, and self-assessment tools. They will acquire a knowledge and purpose of individual development plans and their application to improving student academic, career and personal success. This individual will develop an understanding of OCHE and OPI warehouse data and ability to make annual requests to track prior participants. This person will also establish working relationships with tribal education departments to request tracing information of prior participants.
Required Skills
The ability to establish effective professional relationships with students from diverse cultural backgrounds (especially Native American students).
Knowledge of potential postsecondary barriers associated with students from low income, first generation and minority background, and ability to advise/counsel/mentor students accordingly.
Familiarity with, or the ability to learn the academic requirements of the Montana University System and Tribal Colleges.
Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, good advising practices, standard course and graduation requirements.
Effective public speaking skills in order to conduct formal and informational presentations to school personnel, parents, students, and community organizations.
Professional communication and interpersonal skills.
The ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people.
Extensive computer experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Explorer, and Outlook applications.
Excellent written communications and organizational skills.
Ability to set priorities while under pressure; provide attention to detail and accurate record-keeping.
Self-initiative and independence to conduct duties on a daily basis.
The ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
The ability to travel.
Minimum Required Experience
High School diploma and a bachelor’s degree in a related area or a Master’s degree or an equivalent combination of education.
At least two (2) years of experience or an equivalent combination of experience.
Experience designing effective curriculum and services for the program’s unique student population.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience recruiting, supervising, training and evaluating personnel
Experience establishing staff expectations and motivating high performance
Experience supervising students and staff in a residential capacity—establishing rules, monitoring behavior, and discipline
