Academic Advisor II
The College of Education is invested in the best possible advising experience for our students, and that starts with the removal of barriers and silos between departments and approaching advising from a more college-wide perspective. Our investment in this initiative requires a team of academic advisors who manage and oversee all advising functions in the departments of Teaching & Learning and Educational Leadership. This approach necessitates some degree of cross-training so that we are better able to serve our students. Advisors need to acquire a working knowledge of state, university, college, and department policies, and procedures as well as develop a proficiency with scheduling and email software and UM software systems including Banner, Starfish, DegreeWorks, etc.
This position will work within the Academic Advising Office within the College of Education, overseeing and managing all functions of advising for both the department of Teaching & Learning and the department of Educational Leadership. Occasionally, this may require supervising student employees and/or other staff in the areas of advising.
Upon completion of training, the incumbents will have the working ability, knowledge, and skills to perform the position functions. This includes:
Knowledge of programs and licensure requirements for the Dept. of Teaching & Learning.
• Understanding of UM academic policies, procedures, FERPA, and state licensure
• rules, standards, and requirements
• Promptly responding to telephone, email, and walk-in inquiries concerning program requirements and licensure.
• Tracking professional program requirements related to academic and dispositional
• progress, including probation and suspension/removal of students in the program
• Monitor program applications from inquiry through admittance.
• Ability to evaluate various student transcripts
• Work with students regarding reinstatement plans, academic probation, drop/withdrawal petitions and conduct/behavior issues
• Responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing recruitment, retention,
• professional development for students
• Represent the College of Education at meetings and university events
• Responsible for the creation and maintenance of advising-related materials and
• website content
• Collaborate with departments regarding program requirements, transfer credits and
• substitutions
• Compile data and present reports; create projects in line with the College of Education’s mission and vision as well as initiatives issued by administration
• Collaboratively work with recruitment, orientation and retention offices.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Experience
Bachelor’s degree
Preferred Qualifications
Experience as a P-12 teacher, school counselor, or an academic advisor in a higher education setting
