The Research Associate will contribute to the development of natural capital estimates for offshore oil and gas, commercial fisheries, and beach recreation in execution of the National Strategy to Develop Statistics for Environmental-Economic Decisions.
The project will develop estimates and test data methodologies for the creation of natural capital accounts consistent with the UN System of Environmental-Economic Accounts.
Working with the Director of Research of CBE, this position will have lead or support responsibilities to:
Collect, organize, and create data management structures for offshore minerals, fisheries, and beach recreation.
Collect data from national income accounts on these sectors.
Create input/output tables for the sectors.
Develop forecasting capacity to project future values of the key sectors.
Assess and recommend appropriate discounting methods
Create natural capital accounts consistent with the U.N. Statistics of Environmental Accounts
Check consistency of capital accounting methods with other participants in the Federal Natural Capital Project
Develop recommendations for continued development and updating of the natural capital data
Requirements
Masters degree in economics or related field; PhD (or ABD) preferred
Knowledge of national income accounting, ecological and environmental economics, and finance
High level of data management skills
Strong statistical skills
Familiarity with variety of software and hardware used in data management and statistics such as R, SAS, SPSS, SQL, javascript, etc.
Strong writing and presentation skills to both technical and nontechnical audiences
Ability to work on own, defining and carrying out tasks and reporting as required.
Experience in a work setting (as distinguished from an academic setting) demonstrating above skills a strong plus.
This is a term-limited position with employment to April, 2024
This position is expected to be remote work; residence in Monterey and working in the office is encouraged, but not required. For remote work, employee must have access to reliable internet, adequate computing and communications, and a willingness to manage their own time while staying within schedules determined by the research team.
