Helena College is seeking qualified applicants who wish to become part of a dynamic and creative team for a full-time position as a Accessibility Services Coordinator/Advisor directly serving students registered with our Disability Resources Office and participating in the Montana 10 Program.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Accessibility Services Coordinator/Advisor serves two important functions at Helena College. This position serves as the Accessibility Services Coordinator for students with documented disabilities, as well as, advisor to students in the Montana 10 program and students registered with Accessibility Services.
This position reports to the Director of TRIO and Special Retention Initiatives, who reports to the Executive Director of Enrollment.
Major responsibilities include:
Provide direct accessibility resources program to students and related parties
Receive and process all requests for academic accommodations from students with disabilities
Conduct in-depth interviews with students and analyze documentation when necessary for eligibility determination and formulation of reasonable accommodation plans to ensure equal access to college programs and services
Provide support with assistive technologies when appropriate
Serve as an advocate for accommodated students and act as liaison between students, faculty, and staff
Maintain confidential student records.
Communicate with students, parents, and secondary education representatives regarding academic program requirements and transition to post-secondary education
Administer all elements of Accessibility Resources
Identify, evaluate, and develop program goals, processes, and procedures
Develop and administer budget
Maintain knowledge of current legal rulings and emerging disability issues pertaining to students in post-secondary education
Attend conferences and professional development workshops as funding allows
Hold membership in applicable professional organizations
Academic Advising/Retention
Provides academic advising and support to students leading to successful completion of degree programs and/or building successful transfer plans
Provide general student services assistance and/or referral to new and continuing students using a case management model
As part of Academic Advising Team, coordinate campus events including but not limited to new student orientation; student engagement activities; and training for students, faculty, and staff
Maintains an in-depth knowledge of degree programs and career advising
Keeps detailed records on student progression/goals and provide students with up to date information on their degree progress
Understand campus processes and assist students in navigating those processes
Participates in professional development for advising in order to tailor approach to meet specific needs
Use student software systems to understand the student’s account, track meetings and notes, and be knowledgeable of the academic record for a student
Participate in advising team meetings and activities
Consult and Collaborate
Collaborate with facility and maintenance staff to ensure accessibility
Consult with appropriate community, state, and national organizations and colleagues
Work with faculty and staff on specific student concerns
Serve on institutional CARE committee
Develop Institutional Awareness
Provide faculty and staff training
Help to develop institutional policies and procedures regarding students with disabilities
Communicate program information to the campus community
Educate the larger HC community on disability as an aspect of diversity and promote equal access for all
Student Programming to Support Montana 10
Host and coordinate with other staff to provide new student orientation sessions specific to the program
Host and coordinate with other staff to provide regular events to build community among students
Take initiative to develop new, innovative programs to serve students
There are no supervisory responsibilities in this position; however, the individual must be willing to seek out opportunities for collaborative projects with other Helena College personnel and departments and outside agencies to meet the needs of students.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in applicable area; combination of education and relevant work experience will be considered
3 years related experience
Excellent verbal, writing, problem-solving, and organizational skills
Experience with word and spreadsheet programs
Able to work independently and with others working toward a common goal
Ability to oversee maintenance of materials of a confidential nature including disability information and FERPA-protected student information
Willingness to continuously advance job knowledge through various professional development opportunities
Preferred Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities
Experience working within a higher education setting
Experience working with ADA compliance
Experience working with Disability Resources program in a post-secondary education program
Experience with two-year education
Master’s degree in relevant discipline
Benefit and Salary Information
$15.790 - $19.738 per hour.
