Job Summary
Independent of supervision in a hospital setting, as a significant part of daily duties, provide intense moment-to-moment monitoring and reassessment of emergent, critically ill, or anesthetized patients. Under general supervision of the Small Animal Anesthesia/Surgery/Neurology Services Manager and faculty, assess staff training needs, provide staff training, develop, manage and update training protocols and safety documentation. Evaluate staff on work performance. Assist with writing and conducting annual evaluations of staff. In conjunction with Manager provide coaching and disciplinary action to staff as needed and assess the daily service needs including insuring appropriate staffing levels, work schedule assignments and equipment needs. Set up and test specialized surgical equipment to insure that it is in working order prior to procedures. Assist surgeons in OR scrubbing in as needed. Review surgical packs prior to set up in the O.R. Check to make sure all needed equipment has been pulled for the procedure. Position patient according to the surgeon's request. Circulate in the O.R. and provide technical support. Create SOP's for operation and maintenance of specialized equipment. Inventory and order needed supplies for special equipment.
RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work standing, bending and kneeling for 8-10 hour shifts.
Acute hearing to discern heart and lung sounds using a stethoscope.
Ability to transport patients on gurneys and move patients on and off gurneys and in and out of cages.
Maneuver/lift equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
Handle and restrain animals weighing up to 50 pounds.
Contact with animals (sometimes fractious) as required.
May be required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work occasional overtime and various hours on short notice (including covering staff shortages and holiday shifts).
Work schedule subject to change with prior notification.
Fluctuating meal periods; work schedule does not allow a set meal period.
Work in high traffic areas, confined, or small spaces, noisy environments and tolerate unpleasant odors.
No eating or drinking in surgery, treatment or procedure rooms and some other areas of the hospital.
This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
Work under regular exposure to zoonotic diseases, anesthesia, cleaning chemicals and exposure to radioactive patients.
May require working with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught clients.
Work in other related areas on an as needed basis.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) License or obtain one within 3 months of hire.
Experience supervising staff in a small animal hospital, Veterinary specialty or emergency service setting.
Experience in the use of various specialized surgical and diagnostic equipment and skill to trouble shoot equipment.
Knowledge of common small animal surgical procedures, instruments used for various procedures, patient preparation and equipment.
Skill to address and resolve conflict.
Skills in leadership, organizational management and problem-solving.
Preferred:
Experience developing, implementing and managing technical SOP's, procedural SOP's and enforcing safety protocols and maintaining training documentation in a veterinary hospital setting.
Experience providing intense moment to moment monitoring and reassessment of emergent, critically ill, or anesthetized patients.
Experience assessing staffing needs and developing staff work schedules and assignments according to daily procedure schedules as well as long range service goals with flexibility.
Experience in aseptic technique and circulation in an O.R.
