Library Technician II position
. This position is primarily responsible for providing bibliographic description and classification of general library materials, for both the Mansfield Library and the Payne Family Library at Missoula College, in all formats (including, but not limited to print/digital books, audio visual media materials, digital collections, maps, magazines, and newspapers) and for the creation, control and maintenance of authority data. Duties include copy, complex copy and original cataloging, bibliographic and authority data assessment and maintenance, supervision of student employees, and project management. This position is also responsible for oversite of binding and physical processing of library materials.
Work is performed in a normal office environment. Approximately 90% of a working day is spent at a computer. Some physical lifting and sorting are required. The individual in this position should be able to shift and/or organize library materials on bookshelves; this may include reaching and stooping to access materials on upper and lower shelving, moving small boxes of books (25 pounds or less) and/or maneuvering large carts of library materials weighing up to 300 pounds.
The overall complexity of this position is considered intermediate to advanced in nature. In addition to understanding multiple pre-existing and evolving standards and best practices, this position is required to evaluate and analyze data with relation to current situations within multiple libraries and **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***.. The person in this position must be able to problem solve and make independent decisions based on their knowledge of department, library, university, state, national and international policies, procedures, and standards.

Job responsibilities and expectations include:
Identifying, locating, obtaining, cataloging, and classifying library materials
Providing original bibliographic description and classification of general library materials (in all formats and across all subject areas). Requires working knowledge of data content standards (AACR2 and RDA) data structure standards (MARC21, html, xml, and BIBFRAME), as well as multiple classification systems (Dewey, LCC and SuDoc)
Providing bibliographic, holdings and other data assessment, quality control, and maintenance
Performs complex data management/cataloging functions and makes decisions related to access and presentation of library materials
Oversees and manages the binding processes and assists with minor book mending/preservation activities such as tip ins, gluing, encapsulating, etc.
Oversees and manages the physical labeling/processing of library materials. Includes activities such as stamping, labeling, creating book covers, etc.
Assists with batch loading of vendor provided data and/or catalog records
Assists with the creation and maintenance of name and subject authority data
Assists with adding descriptive metadata and data maintenance of items in the library’s digital collections
Assists with troubleshooting description and access parameters and functionality in the library’s unified services platform (Alma) and discovery layer (Primo)
Analyzes unit needs and hires appropriate student hours to provide maximum customer service
Supervising student employees in the Bibliographic Description and Processing Department
Assists in maintaining comprehensive policy/procedure manuals for Cataloging and Processing
Contributes to policy/procedure development for the Bibliographic Description and Processing Unit
Providing consultation related to cataloging and processing to colleagues within the Collections and Metadata Services Area (e.g. the Acquisitions Technician, Archives & Special Collections Technicians/Curators), the Bibliographic Description & Processing unit, as well as other library service areas and units
Assists with accessibility checking and compliance processing of library owned materials
Serving on department or library wide committees, as necessary
Completing special projects independently or as a member of a project team
Attending training or informational sessions
Upon completion of training, the incumbent will have a working knowledge of both University and Library policies, procedures, and standards as well as proficiency in the use of bibliographic/library standards, such as RDA, AACR2, and Dublin Core. The incumbent will also develop a working knowledge in interpreting, analyzing and applying data structure standards such as MARC21, html, xlm, and BIBFRAME.
Required Skills
Intermediate computer skills. Ability to work with multiple directories and files in a networked environment; use of the Microsoft Office Suite of products including Word, Excel, and Access; ability to learn and use a variety of specialized library related software

Minimum Required Experience
High school diploma (or equivalency) in addition to two (2) years of closely related experience; or any combination of experience and education that provides the competencies necessary to successfully discharge the duties and responsibilities assigned to the position.
Preferred Qualifications
Library specific technology skills including an understanding of and ability to use library cataloging and data manipulation software such as OCLC Connexion, MarcEdit, and other batch editing programs
Ability to use Microsoft Excel at an intermediate to advanced level (includes use of formulas, macros, and pivot tables)
Ability to use Microsoft Access at an intermediate level (includes the ability to create reports, import/export data, and develop new databases as needed)
Knowledge of and proficiency in using data structure standards (MARC21, BIBFRAME, HTML, XML, etc.)
Knowledge of and proficiency in interpreting, analyzing & applying national & international cataloging/metadata rules and standards (AACR2, RDA, Dublin Core, etc.)
Ability to select and create appropriate call numbers using a variety of standard library classification schemes (Dewey, SuDoc, LC, etc.)
Knowledge of and proficiency in interpreting, analyzing and applying established rules and standards of various thesauri and other controlled vocabularies, for the purpose of creating access points in bibliographic records and maintaining local authority files (LCSH, AAT, TGM, etc.)
