invites applications for an
Academic Coordinator
to join their team. This position plans and oversees programming at three (3) high schools in Missoula: Hellgate, Sentinel, and Big Sky High School. The Academic Coordinator researches, designs, and implements afterschool programming, college access workshops, service-learning opportunities, and curriculum design for the six-week Summer Academy, generally defined in the funded Upward Bound (UB) proposal.
This position is responsible for the supervision of summer staff, AmeriCorps members, and student employees. The position requires the candidate to possess (or be able to quickly obtain) a current Montana driver’s license and access to a vehicle; during the academic year, the academic coordinator will drive to target schools located in Missoula.
The Academic Coordinator’s responsibilities involve student assessment, curriculum and service design, weekly afterschool programs, and some personnel management.
Other duties include:
Programming, including weekly individualized or group tutoring in high school subjects (i.e.: math, science, English, social studies).
Planning and implementation to address the requirements of the UB grant, ensure the program is placing a high percentage (90%) of its student participants into a program of postsecondary education, and address the individual needs of each participant.
Service plan assessment followed by planning and implementation of monthly workshops appropriate for each high school grade level. Topics will address college planning and preparation, financial (aid) literacy, career counsel, standardized test preparation, and service learning.
Individualized educational development plans (IDPs) development, which includes student assessment, prescription of services, monitoring, and updating IDP reports.
High school and pre-college advisement through regular meetings with individuals and/or groups of UB students to provide the following services: assessment, academic advisement, financial aid and college admissions assistance, career counsel, scholarship research assistance, and occasional tutoring.
When necessary and appropriate, the position is expected to advocate for student growth through meetings with school leadership and teachers.
Communication with parents and school personnel to inform, remedy problems, and answer questions. This includes annual meetings with parents, daily email correspondence, and occasional presentations about the program
Required Skills
Possess knowledge of potential postsecondary barriers associated with students from low income, first-generation and minority backgrounds, and the ability to advise/counsel/mentor students accordingly
Ability to develop an understanding of the Montana University System's and tribal college major options, admissions policies and procedures scholarship opportunities and procedures, and the financial aid process
Familiarity with, or the ability to, learn the academic requirements of the Montana University System and tribal colleges
Knowledge of good advising practices, and knowledge of (or the ability to learn) standard course and graduation requirements
Effective public speaking skills necessary to conduct formal Upward Bound informational presentations to school personnel and community organizations
Extensive computer experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Explorer, and Outlook
applications
Excellent written communication and organizational skills
Ability to set priorities while under pressure; provide attention to detail and accurate record-keeping
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Minimum Required Experience
High School diploma and two (2) years’ experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience working with high school students from culturally diverse backgrounds
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelors in Education, Psychology, Social Work, or related field.
Previous experience working with disadvantaged populations: low income, first-generation, and cultural minority students
Experience with UM departments, culture, and procedures
Knowledge of MUS and Missoula Public School systems
