The School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences wishes to appoint a Lecturer in one of the following broad areas:
Energy transitions
Environmental management and sustainability
The School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences is a large, interdisciplinary School with an enviable record of success.  Our research and teaching activities address issues of sustainability on land and at sea, and we are seeking to appoint an excellent candidate capable of advancing our inter-disciplinary activities.
You will demonstrate an ability to attract research funding and produce high-quality research outputs and/or impact.  Teaching will be largely into undergraduate and postgraduate Environmental Science programmes, with the potential to expand into at least one other of our programme areas (Chemistry, Geography and Geology). Applicants from the physical and social sciences are encouraged to apply, however it is expected that you will contribute to the delivery of human/social aspects of the programme.  We particularly welcome applications from candidates with expertise in any of the following areas: renewable and sustainable energy; carbon footprinting and life-cycle analysis; environmental business and management; sustainability and systems thinking; social research methods and approaches.
Based in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences comprises four distinct areas across the subjects of chemistry, earth sciences, environmental sciences and geography, each delivering exceptional teaching, support and research.  All our degree programmes are professionally accredited and designed with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals in mind.  Staff and students work and study in the stunning natural landscape of south-west England.  Our national parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, characterful towns and cities, and 650-mile-long coastline provide the backdrop from which we address global sustainability challenges on land and at sea.  An interdisciplinary team of world-class academics undertake teaching and research focused on challenges including climate change, natural hazards, social justice, pollution, energy transitions, land- and seascape conservation and the sensitive development of natural resources.  The School holds an Athena SWAN Bronze award demonstrating the University’s ongoing commitment to advancing gender equality and success for all.
The School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences comprises nearly 60 academic staff and enjoys excellent support from well-resourced laboratory facilities (including 16 technicians).  As well as depth and breadth in and across our subject areas, we have strong academic links across the institution with for example the University’s Sustainable Earth and Marine Institutes.  Our staff members hold research income in excess of £13m from all major funding providers, and teach in excess of 1,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students.
You will be an enthusiastic team-player, and your enthusiasm for your area of expertise will extend to providing excellent teaching informed by professional practice, scholarship and your own research experience.  You will be developing/have developed a track record of excellent academic research, commensurate with the level of appointment and compatible with one of the REF 2021 UoAs to which we returned staff (6, 7 and 14).  You will benefit from a positive and collegiate working environment that values and promotes excellence in all academic activities.
