Hours:
Part Time
Contract Type:
Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On:

Job Ref:

We are looking for a well-organised administrator, ideally with experience in virtual learning environment (VLE) administration, to support our large programme of part-time and distance learning courses.
Your main focus will be on supporting a number of course teams that use the University’s
Canvas
platform to support students on academic courses (materials, discussion forums etc). This involves: planning (for the introduction of new courses and annual roll-over of existing courses, and maintaining records of current and planned usage); staff support (training new staff, trouble-shooting, liaising with the central University over new developments and communicating these to our staff); maintaining the VLE course framework and departmental templates; and occasionally preparing data for reports on departmental VLE usage. Systems and protocols for these are already in place. You will  not
be expected to routinely upload and manage course content, as course teams are responsible for this; however, you should expect to advise on best practice, use your working knowledge of Canvas to support less experienced staff, and to resolve issues that may arise from time to time.
As a member of the department’s Policy and Student Services team, you may occasionally support routine and project work in areas such as quality assurance, student disabilities and funding support, and access, and will also act as Secretary to the department’s Digital Education Group, which meets twice termly.
The role will be attractive to someone with good all-round administrative skills and a career interest in higher education, and in the use of digital education in particular.
You should have:
Excellent organisational and administrative skills
A high level of accuracy and attention to detail
Appropriate technical skills with regard to working with VLEs, including content and site management, user access and the use of VLE tools (ideally with experience in using Canvas)
An ability to work flexibly to deadlines, with excellent time management skills
Good communication skills (written and oral), and the ability to convey detailed and complex information
Strong customer focus and excellent interpersonal skills
An appropriate level of numeracy and experience of working with data
Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
Competence in using standard office IT applications, including word processing, spreadsheets and data management systems, and an ability to learn new IT systems quickly
Experience in the following will help the postholder in this role:
Student administration, preferably in a higher education institution
Using Canvas in particular, and/ or other mainstream VLE platforms
Managing webpage content (a detailed knowledge of HTML is not required)
Providing instruction or training
General administration and committee servicing
The post is based within the Department for Continuing Education’s site at Ewert House in Summertown, North Oxford (parking is available). This post is part-time (averaging 18 hours per week), covering maternity leave, and we will consider flexible working arrangements. The post is available from 1 May 2022 until 30 June 2023 or the actual return of the substantive postholder, or the resignation of the substantive postholder and employment of a new postholder, whichever is the earliest. An initial overlap with the current postholder is planned for training and handover.
Applications for this post are to be made online. You will be required to upload a CV and supporting statement as part of your online application.
The closing date for applications is noon on 29 March 2022.
