The primary purpose of the position of Director of Career Services and Employment Outreach is to direct all aspects of legal career planning, including direct student counseling, career development panels, workshops and programs, resume and cover letter review, and assisting students in the use of career resources and interview preparation. Additional responsibilities include overseeing the Judicial Clerkship Program and the Fall and Spring Recruitment Programs. The Director completes all surveys, and is the primary contact person for employers. The Director markets students to potential employers throughout New York, New Jersey and other desired markets, and maintains relations with other law schools for purposes of participation in regional job fairs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Marketing
Outreach to law firms is vital to this position. It requires constant phone calls and follow-up e-mails for purposes of arranging meetings with key hiring personnel. These meetings, if successful, lead to firms’ participation in recruiting programs at Seton Hall and provide greater employment opportunities for students and alumni. A marketing piece was recently created for use in attracting new employers.
2. Career Counseling
Provide instruction, orientation and counseling to law students and alumni on career related issues. Coach students to develop short and long term job seeking strategies, and oversee career strategic planning and related programming.
3. Document Review/Preparation for Interviews
Review and edit resumes, cover letters, follow-up materials and other employment related materials for students and alumni. Counsel students one-on-one, helping them to identify their professional strengths, and encouraging them to apply to a variety of legal employers. Train students in proper interview etiquette.
4. Judicial Clerkship/On-Campus Interview Programs
Plan and oversee Judicial Clerkship Program and Fall and Spring On-Campus Interview Programs ensuring that all deadlines are met by students, faculty and employers. Ensure that all materials are submitted in a timely manner.
5. Programming
Contact alumni and other attorneys in preparation for programs, workshops, panel discussions and symposia. Implement innovative programs and oversee calendar of events each semester. Keep open dialogue with student organization leaders for ideas on desired programming.
6. Job Fairs/Fellowships/Diversity Issues
Coordinate all regional job fairs, including the Northeast Washington, D.C. Job Fair, the Patent Law Interview Program in Chicago, the NYU Public Interest Career fair in New York and the NJ Law Firm Group Job Fair. Oversee submission of materials by students for the Diversity Programs which include Lowenstein Sandler Fellowship Program, the Latham & Watkins Diversity Fellowship and the New Jersey Law Firm Group Fellowship Program. Inform students of diversity programs and assist with the preparation of materials.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree; 3-5 years in-depth knowledge of the legal profession and legal market trends, excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication and counseling skills are necessary.
