The Office of Student Success invites applications for a Director of Residential and Community Standards to oversee and provide leadership for all activities related to UM Housing’s residential education program, residential area administration, and the University’s student conduct and community standards program. The residential experience is a central element of the student experience and, along with the University’s community standards program, is a key component of **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***.’s student success and retention efforts. The individual occupying this position is expected to create and lead progress towards a strategic vision for the residential experience including curation of the residential curriculum, and development and support of living learning communities (LLCs) and student leadership programs, that foster ongoing student development and academic success. Additionally, the person in this role is responsible for sustaining daily operations of the University community standards program based on student education and grounded in current best practices and legal expectations.
The Director of Residential Education and Community Standards reports to the Executive Director for UM Housing and Community Standards. They will serve as a member of the UM Housing Department Leadership Team with the Executive Director, Associate Directors, and Assistant Directors to formulate departmental policy and practices. This position will directly supervise two (2) assistant directors for Residential Education/Community Standards, and through them, indirectly supervise ten (10) additional full-time professional and administrative staff including area coordinators and residential area administrative staff, as well as up to 100 student workers.
Position duties also include, but are not limited to:
Represent the Executive Director in their absence in all areas related to Residential Education, Community Standards, and other areas of the UM Housing operation as needed;
Conduct research on national housing trends and/or ACHUO-I standards and contrast with current department policy to determine long term, big picture goals;
Responsible for strategic planning, development of short- and long-term goals, and oversight of human and financial/budget resources for Residential Education and Community Standards;
Oversee the implementation of selection, training, and supervision of Assistant Directors, Area Coordinators, Administrative staff, and student staff positions
Oversee the training of housing staff in the areas of conduct, community standards and students’ rights and responsibilities;
Implementation and assessment of UM Housing’s comprehensive residential curriculum in residence hall and apartment residential areas in alignment with Residential Education strategic planning and Division and University goals and initiatives;
Maintaining effective communication and cooperative work associations with UM Housing and Division of Student Success and Student Affairs campus partners and stakeholders;
Provide vision for and collaborate with Residential Education team to develop, implement, and assess LLCs throughout the UM Housing system
Initiate and maintain relationships and communication with faculty and staff in support of the mission of each LLC;
Participate in retention initiatives and planning in consultation with Student Success colleagues;
Create and manage system for identifying students at risk of leaving the university and develop strategies in consultation with Residential Education staff and campus partners to provide targeted student support;
Create strategic plan for ongoing cyclical student success and retention assessment process for Residential Education and Community Standards programs;
Oversee implementation of UM Housing student leadership program for student staff and residential students through Program and Activities Councils (PACs) and Community Councils;
Serve as StarRez Housing Management System Super User and manage residential curriculum and related residential education functions within system;
Monitor all aspects of the daily Residential Education and Community Standards administration and assess the effectiveness of programs, policies, and procedures;
Serve as senior professional responsible and provide oversight for day to day functions of Residential Education and Community Standards programs including residence hall area desk administration, University Villages and Lewis and Clark Village apartment offices administration, apartment occupancy management, and frontline summer conference administration;
Work with Associate Director of Operations and Housing Occupancy Manager to provide input and guidance for residence hall occupancy management to ensure alignment with residential education program;
Administer the student conduct system for **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. and UM Housing;
Adjudicate conduct hearings for students that have violated the Student Conduct Code and/or UM Housing policies as needed to provide relief to Assistant Director and Area Coordinator caseloads;
Serve as one of the primary community standards officers in the appeals process;
Serve as a level five Maxient Administrator;
Oversee UM Housing Clery compliance obligations through supervision of and project assignment to Assistant Directors;
Provide direction and guidance in escalated student crises and emergencies;
Oversee implementation of ongoing student of concern and student care responses for students living in residential areas
Serve as core member of behavioral intervention team or designate an Assistant Director of Residential Education/Community Standards to serve in your place while maintaining relationships with BIT members and attending meetings as needed to coordinate departmental responses;
Act as a liaison to UM staff, faculty, deans, and students for guidance on University conduct policies and processes, as well as coordination of student support services;
Annually review and update the Student Conduct Code and lead or participate in all community standards policy development in collaboration with Residential Education and Community Standards Assistant Directors;
Evaluate and recommend improvements for policies, procedures, education opportunities, and issues of campus safety;
Analyze student conduct trends and direct UM Housing staff efforts in student behavior and management;

Position Details
Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE MUS Contract and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package

Required Skills
A Master’s Degree in a related field, such as Higher Education, College Student Personnel Administration, Public Administration, or Counseling, and seven (7) years progressive experience in a residence life management position, including live-in residence hall or apartment experience and student conduct adjudicatory experience; or any combination of experience and education that would provide the competencies required to successfully discharge the duties and responsibilities assigned to the position
Strong knowledge of residence life and student personnel administration, student staff training and supervision, and diversity issues common within a residence life organization
Demonstrated leadership skills and direct experience with staff supervision, training, and development
The ability to understand and utilize new technology within the office
Establish, maintain, process, and update electronic and paper files, records, and documents
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Maxient, StarRez, or other databases, spreadsheets, etc., for data viewing, collection, and entry
Possess a thorough ability to communicate with a wide variety of people in a precise and professional manner, both orally, electronically, and through written word
Ability to maintain an organized workload requiring multitasking and the need to prioritize various responsibilities with little supervision
Ability to formulate and enforce policies, complete departmental strategic planning, and assist with development of short- and long-term goals within the UM Housing operation
Demonstrated experience identifying and supporting students in crisis
Knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to effectively and efficiently conduct investigations related to student conduct matters
Ability to work collaboratively with a highly diverse contingency of faculty, administrators, staff, and students across campus
Knowledge of FERPA, the Clery Act, and Title IX as they relate to students’ rights to privacy and student conduct code disciplinary proceedings
Experience developing, implementing, and assessing residential education and living learning programs and initiatives
