Job Summary

As a member of the Center of Advising Administration and Academic Partnerships the Advisor's primary responsibility is to provide academic advising and support to upper class students toward enrollment and completion as ODU College of Science Computer Science students. This is accomplished by understanding students' goals and interests, unofficially evaluating previously-completed credits against ODU's curriculums, and discussing transfer pathways, major exploration, degree works review, and registration assistance during Orientation and semester registration. The advisor interprets academic requirements through regular and ongoing communications throughout the recruitment, admission, and first semester enrollment stages. Additionally, the advisor develops and offers strategic data-driven campaigns for upper class students that aid them in the transition from another school or industry to ODU to increase the admit-enroll, retention and graduation rates of computer science transfer and other upper class students. Further, this position collaborates with the freshman advisor for computer science, the CDA for Computer science, and the STEM Completion Coordinator to develop academic success pathways and initiatives focused on directly supporting the university commitment to growing enrollments in computer science students through enhanced outreach and collaboration with the advising teams in College of Sciences and Center for Advising Administration and Academic Partnerships.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in Counseling, Public Administration, Higher Education, or other related discipline. Experience in counseling and advising students in academic difficulty. Training in the use of student information systems. Several years of academic advising experience in a higher education setting. Experience using Banner and Degree Works. Experience with group counseling and teaching required. Excellent inter-personal skills, including public speaking. Strong written communication skills and skills utilizing technology and assessment. Knowledge of counseling and student development theory. Effective programming and presentation skills. General working knowledge of academic vocabulary. Knowledge of transfer students programs, processes, and procedures including working with at-risk populations. Effective organizational skills; versatility and problem-solving skills are a must. Ability to multitask and attend to details and completing job requirements in a dynamic work environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior working experience using Banner and Degree Works, or other technology supporting academic advising or recruitment. Prior working experience advising upperclassemen and transfer students.
