There is an opportunity for a substantive academic consultant appointment within the Neurosurgery department from April 2024. This is a jointly funded post from University Hospitals NHS Trust and the University of Plymouth, Peninsula Medical School. The post holder will provide connections to the Peninsula Medical School,academic group in Neurobiology and build a research portfolio related to cranial neurosurgery. The South West Neurosurgery Centre is based at Derriford Hospital. The Unit provides a comprehensive Neurosurgical Service to the population of Devon, Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly, and part of Somerset. The population of this area is approximately 2 million, but rises considerably during the summer months, with the influx of visitors from other parts of the U.K. and from abroad. Close links exist with the District General Hospitals situated in Truro, Barnstaple, Exeter and Torbay. Rapid transfer of patients between outlying hospitals and Plymouth is facilitated by two helicopter air ambulances. This post is based on a whole time appointment of 10PAs this is a jointly funded post (50:50) by the University of Plymouth and NHS. Up to two additional PAs may be arranged by negotiation via the NHS. The applicant will spend 50% of the working time in clinical work and 50% of time undertaking research and associated roles at the University of Plymouth. The research may link to clinical work. In the clinical setting the appointee will be expected to provide a high standard of care to outpatients and inpatients, in elective and emergency neurosurgery. The successful appointee will undertake general neurological surgery including neuro-oncology. The appointee will also participate in an on-call rota for cranial neurosurgery. The appointee will be expected to support and lead the development of a traumatic brain injury follow-up clinic. The neurosurgery department provides care to adult patients with emergency and elective conditions. Since the nearest paediatric neurosurgical unit is 125 miles away, emergency care is provided to children when the on-call neurosurgeon considers expedient surgical care necessary (after discussion with the Paediatric Neurosurgeons in Bristol). Provision of a comprehensive neurosurgerical/academic post - DCC includes clinics, operating, MDT and ward rounds. The successful candidate may be required to obtain an ATAS Certificate prior to this research being undertaken.
