Media Manager
to join their team. This position coordinates the preparation production, and distribution of written content through **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. The Media Manager reports to the Director of Strategic Communications, and will be an active, engaged lead in all phases of UM communication efforts. This position is responsible for identifying stories that reflect the University’s brand and provide strategic communications to statewide stakeholders and media. The Media Manager will identify stories of importance and impact to produce with guidance from the Strategic Communications Director and will organize photography to secure professional, timely and meaningful content that will demonstrate and buoy the University’s mission in feature stories.
The Media Manager will assist the Strategic Communications Director and the Communications Manager in consulting and identifying University of Montana (UM) content and determine the best media treatment. The person occupying this role will have constant and vigilant eyes on all UM content, and will develop functional relationships across campus to creatively seek-out story leads and identify people, places and programs that reflect the University’s strategic process of becoming a Flagship for the Future, and position UM for success. The tracking and presentation of digital media analytics for select stories is expected. Because this position will be in close contact with professionals on-and-off campus, the position requires confidentiality, tact, sensitivity, and professionalism.
The Media Manager will assign stories to other writers and will supervise the writing and serve as the lead editor. They will provide robust feedback and composition guidance, until the story or content is prepared sufficiently to UM brand standards. The Media Manager will also supervise and organize visual and graphic elements associated with content and will curate a publication calendar and supervise publishing timelines. This position will be expected to provide written copy for video and graphic production, when needed.
At times, the Media Manager will be asked to provide lead communications support initiatives from President’s Office. This position is not responsible for the management or supervision of classified staff members or contract professional employees; however, this position will supervise interns and students workers as necessary. This position will establish strong networks on campus, along with staff in Communications and Marketing, Admissions Office, UM Foundation and the Alumni Association.
Essential duties assigned to this position include:
Identifying and composing diverse stories through the UM News Service
Social media writing
Supporting the creation and editing of University-wide communications
Use of other content platforms when requested (including pieces for Admissions and Marketing).
Required Skills
Ability to maintain confidentiality, tact, sensitivity, and professionalism.
Minimum Required Experience
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English or a related field and more than five (5) years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Previous journalism experience is a significant plus.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in journalism, English, or a related field and 10 years of experience working with publications, news or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
