The Reading Specialist/Advisor is a half-time, grant funded position dependent on continued funding of a federal, U.S. Department of Education TRIO grant. The Reading Specialist/Advisor plays a key role in the assessment, development of individual competencies and support of students participating in the Student Support Services Program. This position promotes the retention and academic success of Program students by establishing relationships with instructors, other academic support staff, and Program counselors to bridge the gap between college course requirements and the needs of the student. The Reading Specialist/Advisor reports to the Assistant Director/Counselor of Student Support Services and ultimately to the Director of Academic Support Services.
Requirements:
Knowledge required:
Master's Degree in Reading, English, Education, or a closely related field.
Additional coursework in learning disabilities, adult learners, communication skills, counseling and/or student assessment.
At least two years of experience teaching Reading preferably on the college level.
Experience working with post secondary students, adult learners, low income students, ESOL students, learning disabled students and first generation college students.
Computer literacy in Microsoft Office, Blumen, and Colleague preferred.
