Person Specification
The Principal Lecturer role is essential to ensuring that all aspects of the Musical Theatre curriculum are delivered in line with educational requirements and the high standards of vocational training at Performers College. This post has a central role in maintaining our national standing as a centre of excellence. The role requires a highly experienced, motivated professional with a strong background in performing arts training.
The successful applicant will work closely with all departments within the College and will report directly to the Head of Education.
This is a senior post, therefore leadership skills, excellent communication, planning, organisational and time management abilities are essential. Your considerable challenge will be to ensure that as the Institution continues to grow, an excellent provision of Contemporary Dance training for students will be maintained to the highest standard.
You will have responsibility for the day-to-day teaching and learning within the Musical Theatre area of the Performers College BA Musical Theatre & Dance programme. The post holder will have responsibility for managing Associate Lecturers within the Musical Theatre department, conducting lesson observations and supporting practical delivery and assessment across the department.
You will be passionate about performing arts education and sharing your knowledge to nurture the next generation of industry professionals. You will have a student-centred approach and be committed to helping us create a supportive community, leading from the front ensuring your department lives the values of our college’s inclusive ethos.
Essential criteria
Qualified to degree level or equivalent professional experience in your specialism
Made significant contribution to the performing arts industry
Strong industry reputation and well connected within your field
Relevant teaching experience, with proven track record of success and continued improvement
Strong leadership skills
Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate at all levels to articulate the broad vision to staff, to which they can relate
Hold or be willing to gain a safeguarding qualification
Dedicated to continuing professional development
Desirable Criteria
Experience assessing modules at degree level
Management/mentoring experience
Masters, PGCert or equivalent
Experience of sector-standard software and Virtual Learning Environments (VLE)
Key Accountabilities:
The post holder will report on a day-to-day basis directly to the Head of Education and will be required to meet the following key accountabilities. These accountabilities are indicative of the roles and responsibilities you will have, however these may change in line with the needs of the college.
Planning, preparing and teaching lessons as timetabled; ensuring students are engaged, informed and encouraged to achieve their full potential
Ensuring that the quality of teaching within your department meets the required Performers College/BIMM Institute standards; proactively responding to feedback received from the Head of Education and ensuring content and examples are relevant, and that lesson content and materials are regularly refreshed
Accurate and timely completion of lesson registers, reporting student absences accurately
Ensuring assessments are carried out as directed
Marking assessments as directed and in accordance with the Performers College/BIMM Institute guidelines
Moderating assessments and examinations as directed
Maintaining industry connections to keep knowledge of industry and specialist subjects current and up to date to support your department’s teaching success
Providing academic input on existing, new courses and modules as requested
Consulting and supporting the Head of Education and College Principal to identify, recommend and help recruit Lecturers and Deputies
Sourcing and securing appropriate deputies for classroom teaching when necessary
Delivering personal tutorials for students as directed
Developing and delivering student experience enhancement initiatives
Implementing College policies as detailed in the Staff Handbook
Assessing, recording, and reporting on the development, progress and attainment of the students, and providing colleagues with this information where appropriate
Working with the Head of Education to promote effective Quality Assurance
Providing appropriate guidance and advice to students on academic and pastoral matters, signposting to specialist support from colleagues where appropriate
Participating in management meetings which relate to the curriculum, administration or organisation of the College
Maintaining good order and discipline among students, safeguarding their well-being and health and safety
Supporting the college at public performances and events
Being an Ambassador for Performers College at audition days and open days, helping to promote the college and encourage students to study with us
