the direction of the lead interpreter and/or manager.  On a limited/fill-in basis, will assist with
scheduling/dispatching in order to effectively provide qualified language
services to patients who are limited-English proficient (LEP), Deaf/Hard of
Hearing (HOH), and those with sensory needs.   Will also support staff/patients in
problem-solving any complex or unique communication needs, including rounding
on inpatients regarding language services, and proactively identify
opportunities for improving services to our LEP patient and family population.  Assists with other projects as assigned.  Essential Functions

1. Provide face-to-face/video-remote Spanish
interpretation to patients, families, staff, physicians, including, but not
limited, to giving directions and instructions for medical care, explaining
hospital policies and procedures, informing and obtaining medical consents, and
provide other interpretation as needed to ensure a positive patient and family
clinical experience. Communicate effectively with persons from various
educational and socio-cultural backgrounds. 
Translate written documents, as needed and appropriate.

2. Serve as a cultural broker to educate and
provide clarification to hospital staff, physicians, clinicians, and
patients/families on differences between Hispanic/Latino cultures and culture
of medicine.

3. Round on LEP/Deaf/HOH inpatients as needed,
to confirm patient language needs and identify any safety issues.

4. Investigate and problem-solve communication
issues for LEP/Deaf/HOH individuals, with assistance and under the direction of
lead interpreter and/or manager.

5. Follow and adhere to the NCIHC and IMIA
Code of Ethics for Interpreters in Health Care.

6. Educate staff, physicians, and clinicians
on the use and documentation of language services, when needed, in order to
ensure compliance. Services may include the proper use of face-to-face (staff
and contract) interpreters, over-the-phone interpretation, and/or video-remote
interpretation, as well as other auxiliary aids.

7. Ensure that patient or family understands
the information presented, seeking help of staff to further clarify when
needed.  Act as an advocate for patients
and ensure that they are comfortable with what is happening in their medical
treatment and that anxiety is reduced.

8. Maintain confidentiality of all
patient/private information, as well as develop positive working relationships
with patients/families, staff and physicians, including manager and fellow
interpreters.

9. Maintain a professional presence with
patients and families.  Do not speak for
or about patients and families but facilitate communication between them and
their care team.

10. Stay current on the latest developments, advancements,
and trends in the field of language assistance/interpretation and incorporates
appropriate ideas into a clinical setting. 
Identify appropriate training for self when appropriate and within
budget constraints.

11. Maintain knowledge of applicable laws,
rules, regulations, policies, etc. that impact language assistance and ensure
compliance in all areas.

12. Travel, as needed, to other locations
within KentuckyOne Health.  Provide
on-call support, as scheduled.

13. Must acquire continuing education credits
of at least 4 hours per year, OR the amount required for national certification
renewal, if applicable.

14. Perform other duties as
assigned.','!*!Education / Accreditation / Licensure (required & preferred):

Bachelor Degree required.

Successful completion of system approved interpretation training program (“Bridging the Gap” program or equivalent) AND proven language proficiency (using system approved rating)– for spoken languages, required
OR
National Medical/Healthcare Interpreter Certification (CMI or CHI) – for spoken languages, highly preferred

American Translators Association (ATA) certification highly preferred.

Experience (required
and preferred):


 

Minimum
of 1 year prior experience in medical interpretation/language services
required.   Must be able to clearly
communicate instructions, questions, and answers in both English and target
language (Spanish) based on the patient, family member, or consumer’s preferred
language. Knowledge of medical terminology required.
