Flathead Lake Biological Station (FLBS)
invites applications for a
Public Education Coordinator
to join their team. The FLBS Education Coordinator will be responsible for engaging the K-12 community with education and outreach programs developed at FLBS. This position may periodically supervise temporary or seasonal positions such as undergraduate interns and any others needed to support events or programs. This position communicates with Education Liaison about performance, pay, and employment matters related to these individuals. The Public Education Coordinator reports to the FLBS Education Liaison. This position will possibly involve working some weekends and evenings.
Key duties and responsibilities include:
Collaborate with a diverse team of FLBS faculty members, administrators, staff, and partner organizations
Participate in designing and delivering lessons (and associated materials) based on FLBS research projects for appropriate K-12 age levels in accordance with various state and national standards
Teach a variety of lessons during field trip experiences to FLBS for K-12 school children; create and adapt education materials as needed
Coordinate school/camp related visits to FLBS including managing logistics, scheduling and participant communications
Deliver education materials in a variety of venues including K-12 classrooms, libraries and public events, ensuring educational effectiveness and excellence
Assist in developing on-line/web-based teaching activities/virtual field trips
Assist in writing proposals for external funding to expand and enhance the K-12 education activities at FLBS
Control expenditures in accordance with budget allocations
Maintain and coordinate usage of educational field trip equipment and supplies
Perform tasks related to specific function/program assigned such as developing brochures, writing reports, or other unique projects
Serve as a representative to ensure all aspects of function/program are implemented and controlled according to plans
Required Skills
Experience delivering balanced environmental /science education programs in formal or informal learning environments
Experience developing educational programs; writing curriculum in accordance with various state and national standards
Ability to present science process and accurate content in an engaging way with diverse populations of learners
Experience in project planning and coordination
Ability to write a variety of documents ranging from reports to lessons
Knowledge of national science teaching standards
Knowledge of ecology/environmental science
Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision
Ability to use computers and various software programs (i.e. MS Word, MS Excel) to complete tasks
Ability to communicate in a clear, effective, and professional manner with a wide variety of individuals and groups at all ages and levels, including effective interpersonal skills
Minimum Required Experience
Bachelor’s degree in science or science education.
Two (2) years of teaching experience in formal or informal settings OR any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Preferred Qualifications
Three (3) or more years’ experience working in science/environmental education
An advanced degree in science/environmental education
Strong writing skills
Collaborated with K-12 teachers or informal educators in developing curriculum
Worked directly with scientists on research projects
Knowledge of aquatic ecology
Proven ability to create engaging learning experiences, both online and in person
Delivering educational outreach material to K-12 students at a biological field station

The Flathead Lake Biological Station is a field research and teaching facility designated as a Center of Excellence of **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***.. The mission of the Bio Station is to conduct basic and applied research in ecology with an emphasis on freshwater; provide field ecology courses for college students, K-12 teachers and natural resource professionals; train graduate students for professional or teaching careers; and, provide scientific data, interpretation and outreach to help resolve environmental problems and inform public policy locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. The faculty and staff also generate and maintain natural resource databases used by the public and resource management agencies in addition to supporting the research program at the Bio Station.
